HPU Falls to Gardner-Webb in Big South Match Play

Stroke Play Recap

FRIPP ISLAND, S.C. —
After entering match play as the top seed following a 31-under stroke play team performance, High Point University fell to Gardner-Webb University in the match play semifinals of the Big South Conference Championship Sunday morning.

HPU Head Coach Todd Eckstein: "As a coach, you're always telling your guys that they're going to be playing their best when the lights are brightest and our guys were absolutely at that level this week. The three days of stroke play were the best stretch of play I've ever been a part of from a team perspective, as a coach or a player. We had three different guys make the all-tournament team, three different guys shoot their personal best in a High Point uniform, and to top it all off we had Fred win the individual medalist award after a playoff. We set countless records along the way and our guys certainly have a lot to be proud of this week.

"The Gardner-Webb team played some pretty exceptional golf and we just couldn't get it together for one more day. But we finally played a complete 54-hole tournament and I'm very proud of all our group accomplished this year and I'm excited to see where Fred gets sent to for the NCAA regional on Friday."

Miller Carr was first to tee off against Gardner-Webb's Max White in the semifinal match play event. Carr put up quite a fight against one of the Bulldog's best players as the match was tied through most of the front nine. Carr lost his footing as he entered the back nine, eventually falling to White, 5 and 4.

Grady Newton was second for the Panthers paired with Jules Bondil. Newton crushed his opponent, taking an immediate lead on the first hole, which he held throughout the match, winning 5 and 4.

Charlie Barr's match against Jack Boyer was the third to finish. Barr stuck through the front nine 2-down, but, similarly to Carr, lost his footing in the back nine, falling to Boyer, 5 and 3.

Stroke play medalist Fred Roberts IV had an exciting match against Bradley Davis Jr. Unlike his teammates, Roberts fell behind in the front nine, teeing off on hole 14 down by 4, but Roberts showed extreme tenacity like no other.

Roberts had to win every hole from 14 on to push the match to extra holes and advance the Panthers to the finals. The graduate student handled the pressure well, winning holes 14, 15, and 16. Trouble began on hole 17 as Roberts was faced with a long putt to win the hole. He stayed cool and calmly sunk the putt while his teammates went crazy with excitement. With one more hole to go before extra play, Roberts hit a tough ball off the green, giving Davis a chance to swoop in and take the win, 1-up.

Gregor Meyer was the final matchup of the day. Meyer held steady with a 1-up lead on the front nine. He fell behind on the back nine when his competitor, Carter Rains, managed to take his first lead of the day for a few holes. Gregor tied the match once again on 14, but the pair wasn't able to finish as Roberts lost his match, allowing Gardner-Webb to advance, 3-1-1.
