HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.—High Point University earned the 2020-21 Big South Conference Women's All-Sports Trophy and finished second in the Sasser Cup standings, the conference announced Tuesday night (May 25) at The Big South's annual Spring Meetings Awards Banquet, which was held at The Westin Resort on Hilton Head Island, S.C.
This the third time HPU has won a Big South end of the year trophy and the third consecutive year the Panthers have claimed the Big South Women's All-Sports Trophy.
High Point has won 11 Big South championships in the 2020-21 academic year across both Men's and women's sports with the Panther women providing eight of them. women's basketball won the first titles of the year for HPU winning both the Big South regular-season and tournament title. The Big South Tournament championship win was the first in women's basketball program history. Jenson Edwards was named the Tournament MVP. The women's basketball team represented HPU in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament for the first time facing UCONN in the first round.
Women's cross-country won its fourth straight Big South Cross-Country as the Panthers placed first with a team score of 29. Senior Famke Heinst won her fourth straight individual Big South title which this year automatically qualifies her for the 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championship in Stillwater, Ok.
HPU Volleyball had its most successful season yet as the Panthers won the Big South and defeated UCF in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. It was just the second Division I NCAA Tournament win in HPU Athletics history as the volleyball program joined the women's lacrosse team from 2017 as the only programs to win an NCAA Tournament contest. Additionally, it was the first NCAA Tournament victory for any Big South volleyball program.
Women's Soccer won its second straight Big South regular season title and achieving an undefeated regular season. The Panthers finished with a record of 10-1 and received its highest rankings in program history being ranked as high as 24 in the media polls.
Women's Lacrosse claimed the regular-season title and won its fourth consecutive tournament title. It marked the fourth straight time the Panthers had won both the regular-season title and the tournament championship. Abby Hormes was named the Tournament MVP.
High Point women's track and field won its first-ever Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championship with 279.5 team points. HPU finished the championship with ten individual titles. Zoe Geis headlined the championship week for the Panther Women as she received the honor of the Big South's most valuable athlete.
These eight women conference titles powered HPU to its third Big South Women's All-Sports Award with a total of 11.29.
High Point's men's teams finished third for the Big South Men's All-Sports Award. The Panthers won three Big South men's conference championships in 2020-21.
High Point Men's Soccer 'did the double' and won both the Big South regular-season and tournament title. It was the first-ever Big South Tournament Championship victory in program history. Nick Phipps was named the Tournament MVP. The Panthers made their second NCAA Tournament appearance and faced Georgetown in the first round.
Men's track and field won its first-ever Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championship with 265 team points. HPU finished the championship with eight individual titles. Hocine Bouchrak was named the Big South's most outstanding performer. His time of 8:49.11 in the steeplechase secured this honor as his time was currently the 32nd fastest in the nation the night of the meet.
High Point finished runner up for the Big South Conference's George F. "Buddy" Sasser Cup Trophy. The Sasser Cup Trophy is named for former Big South Commissioner Buddy Sasser and is awarded to the Big South member institution with the most successful year athletically, based on an average points system.
HPU won 13 conference titles this year across all sports and two conferences including men's lacrosse's SoCon regular season and tournament championships this season. HPU will finish the year having sent 13 individuals to NCAA Regionals with Brandon Einstein qualifying for and playing in the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Regional Tournament while Samantha Vodry was selected to compete as an individual in the 2021 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Regional Tournament and became the first golfer in program history to compete in the NCAA Tournament with her selection. 11 members of the HPU track and field team will compete at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships starting tomorrow (May 26th).
High Point also had two individuals represent the Purple & White at NCAA National Championships in Sydney Horn at the NCAA Indoor Track and field National Championships and Famke Heinst at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships.
