Remy Tamer Named Director of HPU Track & Field and Cross Country Programs

HIGH POINT, N.C. — High Point University Vice President and Athletic Director Dan Hauser announced the promotion of Remy Tamer as the new HPU Director of Track & Field/Cross Country. Tamer moves into the new role after the retirement of longtime Head Coach Mike Esposito.

"Remy Tamer is a championship coach who has won nine conference titles leading our High Point University Women's Cross Country team during his 10-year tenure," HPU Vice President and Athletic Director Dan Hauser said. "Remy's passion for the sport and his dedication to HPU make him the ideal candidate to become our new head coach. I'm thrilled for Remy to earn this new leadership role and I'm confident that he will execute a strategic plan with our talented coaching staff to build on the championship legacy of our program. There is tremendous potential for HPU to expand our recent national success, and Remy Tamer is a perfect fit to maximize this future opportunity."

Tamer is no stranger to the High Point way as he has been HPU's women's cross country coach since August of 2016. In his 10 seasons with the program, he has guided the Panthers to nine straight Big South Conference Women's Cross Country Championship titles (2017-2025). Tamer earned his seventh Big South Coach of the Year honor in 2025 and had five athletes earn All-Conference recognition.

"My appreciation goes to President Nido Qubein, Dan Hauser, and Drew Sanchez for creating a climate for our cross country and track & field program to thrive," Tamer said. "We are in a good place and ready to take a major leap forward. Their leadership will be instrumental in our future success. I am grateful to Coach Esposito for building such a powerful organization over the last two decades and modeling how to be a director with integrity. It is an honor to carry the torch that Coach Esposito so brilliantly carried. I want to thank now, and always, the staff I get the privilege to work with every day. Without them none of this is possible. And I want to thank my parents for doing their best to raise children to have a big heart and who aren't afraid of hard work."

Overall, Tamer has had six Big South Cross Country Runners of the Year and eight individual medalists at the Big South Cross Country Championships. From 2017-2020, Famke Heinst was crowned a four-time Big South Cross Country Runner of the Year and individual medalist. Since then, Brianna Malone has won three Big South Cross Country Championship individual titles, entering her senior season.

Twenty-five of Tamer's athletes have earned Big South Cross Country All-Conference recognition, winning a total of 51 awards since 2016 – led by four athletes who have been named an All-Conference runner all four years of their college career (Zoe Geis – 2016-2019, Heinst – 2017-2020, Lindsay Ickes – 2018-2022 5th year, and Charli Montalvo – 2022-2025).

"Remy has been an integral part of our track & field and cross country programs for the past 10 years," HPU Deputy AD Drew Sanchez said. "He understands what makes High Point University special and is well positioned to lead us into the next chapter. His passion for the sport, commitment to the holistic development of our student-athletes, and vision for the future make him the right leader for our program. I am excited to continue working alongside Remy as we build on the strong foundation already put in place by Mike Esposito and pursue even greater success for High Point Track & Field and Cross Country."

Along with cross country, Tamer has coached the women's distance team during the indoor and outdoor seasons. Since 2016, HPU has won 25 Big South Indoor Track & Field individual titles and currently holds two Big South records in the Mile (4:34.86) and 3000m (9:09.58), both set by Malone. Across the outdoor seasons, the Panthers have won 27 Big South individual titles in the distance events led by Heinst with eight titles alone. High Point holds two Big South Outdoor Track & Field records in the 1500m (4:11.37) set by Malone and the 3000m steeplechase (10:09.14) set by Hannah Brookover.

During Tamer's time, he has had four Big South Track Athletes of the Year, three Most Outstanding Performances at the Big South Track & Field Championships, two Most Valuable Athlete of the Big South Track & Field Championship meets, two Big South Newcomer's of the Year and a Big South Freshman of the Year. Tamer has been a vital piece in the program's championship dominance, winning five straight Big South Men's and Women's Indoor titles and six consecutive Big South Outdoor Men's and Women's titles. Over the past five seasons, the Panthers have won a combined 22 trophies.

At the NCAA East First Rounds, six athletes under Tamer's guidance have qualified including, Heinst, Geis, Ickes, Brookover, Malone and Katie Taylor.

Heinst and Geis were named to the Big South All-Decade team (2010-2019) for their outstanding careers.

"Almost 20 years ago, we recruited a young man from West Forsyth High School to be a member of the HPU Track & Field team," Mike Esposito, former HPU Director of Track & Field and Cross Country (2005-2026). "Though he attended college elsewhere, Remy Tamer came back to serve as our women's cross country and distance coach and has overseen one of, if not the most dominant teams in Big South history. I'm excited that he has been rewarded for his loyalty and exceptional results in being named the Director of High Point University Track & Field and Cross Country. Remy has a constant motor, genuine passion for the sport, curiosity to always improve, and will be more than up to the task in the fast and ever changing college sports landscape. I am equally excited that he will retain the bulk of what I believe to be the best track & field staff in America. In addition, he will be adding two new outstanding coaches to the family. As a first time Director, Remy will have some of the best people and brightest minds in our sport to lean on and consult with. In addition, I know that he will continue to have the amazing support from Dr. Qubein, Mr. Hauser, and Drew Sanchez. I have no doubt that HPU Track & Field is in great hands moving forward and will establish an even greater national prominence."

Tamer joined the HPU staff after spending two years at Florida State University as first a volunteer and then part-time coach. There, he helped mentor a number of All-ACC selections and NCAA qualifiers. During Tamer's time in Tallahassee, the women's cross country runners garnered four All-ACC selections and nine USTFCCCA all-region accolades. Cross country standout Carmela Cardama Baez was both an all-ACC and USTFCCCA All-Region selection.

On the track, Chelsea Jarvis earned second team indoor All-America honors at the NCAA Championship (800m), while the women's distance medley relay raced to a second place ACC showing in 2016, just missing NCAA qualification by two positions.

Bridget Blake earned second team All-ACC honors in the mile run (indoor), then tallied a runner up finish in the 3000m steeplechase outdoors while qualifying for the NCAA Championship in the event. Blake also finished sixth in the outdoor 1500m and garnered All-ACC accolades. On the strength of the Seminoles' distance squad, Florida State captured the 2016 ACC Outdoor Championship.

While in Tallahassee, Tamer also attended Florida State University earning a masters degree in Sport Psychology. During that time, he was an assistant cross country and track coach at the Maclay School where he helped the lady Marauders win the 2013 Florida 1A Track & Field Championship and the boys to a repeat runner-up finish at the 2012 and 2013 Florida 1A Cross Country Championships. During this time Maclay produced four individual state champions and two state champion relay teams.

Tamer also worked for a professional track & field results company and served as a sport psychology consultant to athletes and teams in the Tallahassee area ranging from youth sports to NCAA programs.

Tamer was a two-time Academic All-American at UNC Wilmington, where he also won the Seahawks' cross country Rookie of the Year Award in 2007 and is a part of the school record 4x800m relay time that still stands today. He graduated from UNC Wilmington in 2011 with a degree in psychology and earned his master's degree from Florida State in sport psychology in 2014.

Tamer has also worked as a resident intern at ZAP Fitness in Blowing Rock, N.C., a professional running club that features a strong alumni base. He is a USTFCCCA Level 2 certified track & field coach and has earned his USATF Level 1 coaching certification.
