CHARLOTTE, N.C. – On Friday and Saturday, the High Point University men's track and field team headed south for a meet hosted at the University of North Carolina Charlotte. The team participated in the Charlotte Invitational across both days.
On Friday, the Panthers only had three athletes compete in the field events.
Cole Wilson and
Nigel Steenwinkel threw in the javelin. Wilson posted a season-best throw 49.25m for sixth place while Steenwinkel threw 39.33m. In the hammer throw,
Bradley Weiner placed fifth with a solid 53.20m throw.
In the evening on the track, High Point kicked things off with a strong performance in the 5000m Open event. Three freshman Panthers placed first through third, each registering new personal best times.
Max Bonilla was first with a 14:45.05 time, Simon Triezenburg was second with a 14:58.54 time and
Blake Nicholson was third with a 15:00.31 time.
Gavin Stevens closed out the night in the 5000m Invite and placed second with a season-best 14:38.05 time.
On Saturday, all events hit the ground running in the morning. In the field events,
Caleb Barley threw in the discus and landed a sixth place spot after throwing 49.66m. Barley later competed in the shot put and threw 17.07m for fourth place.
In the pole vault, two Panthers placed within the top five which included
Ricardo Montes de Oca in first after clearing 5.52m and Jason Olivera, Jr. in second with a 5.32m height.
On the track,
Dominiq Northington and
Ethan Stallone placed in the top 10 in the 110m hurdles. Northington clocked a 14.24 time for third place and Stallone clocked a 14.76 time for eighth place. Northington later competed in the 200m and placed eighth with a season-best 21.86 time.
In the 400m, two Panthers crossed within milli seconds of each other.
Tim Brown, the current 400m record holder, finished third with a 46.79 time.
Camerin Williams was right there with him in fourth place, registering a new personal best, 46.86 time.
Myles Darroch also crossed the finish line in the top 10, placing eighth with a 47.82 time.
Greg Abel raced in the 800m open and placed 3rd overall with a 1:55.42 time.
Closing out the track events, the 4x400m relay team took gold in the race with a new season-best 3:08.30 time. The relay team included Brown, Darroch, Steenwinkel and Williams.
