CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Big South Conference announced the men's and women's track and field athletes of the week on Wednesday April 24. High Point University dominated the awards, winning all three awards on the men's side and securing two awards for the women. Last weekend the Panthers competed at the Wake Forest Invitational and the Aggie Invitational.
Brianna Malone was named the women's track athlete of the week for the fourth time this indoor and outdoor season, making it her first time during the outdoor season. She first broke the school record in the 1,500m run at the Wake Forest Invitational with a time of 4:15.37, which is third-fastest in Big South history on Friday April 18. Then she won the 800m at the Aggie Invitational with a personal best effort of 2:07.17 to move into ninth all-time in conference annals in that event.
Quiana Williams was named the women's freshman of the week, earning her sixth athlete of the week award this season as a freshman. She finished fourth in the 200m at the Wake Forest Invitational with a time of 23.96 and helped the Panthers' 4x400m relay team finish fourth in a time of 3:42.79 at the Aggie Invitational.
Jackson Toumey was named the men's field athlete of the week for his efforts in the men's pole vault at the Wake Forest Invitational. He won the pole vault with a personal best clearance of 5.18m, posting the top mark in the league this season.
The High Point men's 4x400m relay team finally broke sub 3:06 and were named the men's track athletes of the week. The team consisted of
Marquis Belle,
Camerin Williams,
Aidan Britt and
Tim Brown. They won the 4x400m relay at the Aggie Invitational with a time of 3:06.96, which is an HPU program record and ranks fifth all-time in Big South history.Â
Both Brown and [Camerin] Williams were named the men's co-freshman of the week as each competed in individual events at the Wake Forest Invitational. Brown finished second in the 400m with a time of 46.77. He bested his own school record, and remains atop the conference's leaderboard in the event. [Camerin] Williams won the 800m with a personal best time of 1:48.97 -- the sixth-fastest mark in Big South history.
High Point prepares to compete at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Thursday-Saturday and at the Charlotte Invitational on Friday and Saturday this weekend.
