DAVIDSON, N.C. — The High Point University men's golf team wrapped up its season-opening tournament at neighboring school Davidson College Tuesday afternoon after 54 holes of play.

Site: Davidson, N.C.
Course: River Run Country Club
Par/Yardage: 70/6871

HPU Team Finish: 14 of 14 teams — 299, 296, 285 (880) +40

Head Coach Todd Eckstein: "We collectively didn't fulfill our expectations for the start of our season. Life is about how you respond to success or failure. I'm proud of how Miller (Carr) chose to respond today and get his first collegiate under-par round. We will be more ready for the rest of our season because of what we learned about ourselves this tournament."

Panther Placement
T22, Gregor Meyer (+5)
T36, Fred Roberts IV (+10)
T44, Jay Smith (+11)
T48, Miller Carr (+12)
T68, Burch Harrison (+17)
T75, Grady Newton (+19)

Miller Carr made his collegiate debut at the River Run Collegiate. Carr started off shaky, shooting a 76 and a 77 on rounds one and two, respectively. However, the freshman didn't let a disappointing first day stop him from doing his best in the final round. Carr sunk three birdies during the third round, carding an 1-under 69 for the day and landing him T48.

Gregor Meyer secured the best overall score for the Panthers, landing a top-25 finish. The redshirt-senior stayed consistent throughout the tournament, carding a 72 for the first two rounds, before shooting a 71 the next day, good for a T22 finish.

Next on the board for the Panthers was transfer student, Fred Roberts IV. Roberts had a tough first day like his fellow teammates to their standard, but corrected his game in the final round. The grad student shot a 74 and a 75 in the first and second round, respectively. The next day, Roberts carded a 71, giving him a T36 finish.

Jay Smith was another Panther making his collegiate debut. The freshman, who was playing as an individual, carded a 76 on the first round, but he quickly adjusted his game to shoot a 73 the next time around. The next day, Smith improved even more, posting a 1-over 72, landing him a T44 finish.

Burch Harrison and Grady Newton also played for High Point. Harrison carded a 227 total giving him a T68 finish, while Newton carded a 229 (T75).

All together, High Point landed a 14th place finish with an 880 total. The Panthers' best round was the third, where the team carded 285, the fifth-best team score of the day.
