HPU Finishes Fall Slate Behind Top-Five Placement

GREENSBORO, N.C. — High Point University scored a top-five finish in the final fall tournament as family and friends spectated during the 54-hole Bryan National Collegiate that wrapped up Monday afternoon.

Site: Greensboro, N.C.
Course: Bryan Park Golf Course
Par/Yardage: 72/7255

HPU Top Finisher: Gregory Meyer (T18) — 74, 73, 72 (219) +3
HPU Team Finish: 5 of 13 teams — 297, 289, 295 (881) +17

HPU Head Coach Todd Eckstein: "While we still have plenty of progress to make on our goals, it was nice to beat some teams that had our number earlier in the season. Gregor capped off a very solid fall season, and I was encouraged to see Fred continue to knock the rust off after his injury. This off-season will be crucial as we pursue a Big South title."

Panther Placement:
(T18) Gregor Meyer +3
(T26) Fred Roberts IV +5
(T38) Charlie Barr +7
(T43) Grady Newton +9
(T43) Burch Harrison +9
(T47) Jay Smith +10

High Point made moves up the leaderboard as the Panthers finished fifth in their final fall tournament, a feat led by none other than Gregor Meyer. The senior carded a 2-over in the first round, but then continued to progress, shooting a 73 and a 72 in the second and third round, respectively, to land a T18 finish. Fred Roberts IV dusted off his clubs and hit the course following an injury that sidelined him for a few events. Roberts came back ready to play, shooting a 73 the first round before shooting a 75 in the second to tie with Meyer. Roberts finished out the tournament with another 73, placing him T26.

Charlie Barr saw major improvements from his performance at the Furman Intercollegiate. Barr carded a 7-over total to land T38, which was five strokes better than his previous performance. Burch Harrison and Grady Newton both shot 9-over to secure a T43 finish. Harrison stayed consistent the first two rounds, carding a 74 in both, assisting him to a 225 total. Newton carded an 8-over in the first round, but the senior quickly cleaned up his game to score 4-under next time around, helping him to his T43 finish.

Freshman Jay Smith also attended the tournament as an individual. Smith's best round was the second, where he carded an even 72, which helped the freshman place T47 with a 226 total.

Up Next: HPU heads out of the country to Puerto Rico to compete in the Palmas Del Mar Collegiate just before Valentine's Day to kickoff the spring schedule in February.
