ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Eight Panthers claimed gold medals at the Wesley A. Brown Invitational over the weekend. High Point athletes also set new school records in four events over the weekend as well.
Head coach
Mike Esposito: "We had a great meet with four school records and numerous event wins. There was a huge turnout by our parents. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but we have the group and staff to get it done. We have a big two-week block ahead of us."
Deron Dudley won the 200m dash while breaking the indoor school record with the fourth-best mark in program history, running to the first-place finish in 21.42. Dudley also competed in the 60m dash, finishing third in 6.78.
Ethan Roach also ran in the 60m, finishing 6
th overall.
Freddie Allen III broke the indoor school record in the long jump (7.48m), finishing second with the fourth-best mark in program history.
Terris Burton II rounded out the sprint races with a fourth-place finish in the 400m dash with a time of 49.46.
In the men's 5,000m, High Point claimed three of the top-four finishes as
Ian Miller won the event (14:44.99),
Hunter Steinau finished third (15:17.97), and
Ben Dertinger finished fourth (15:22.60). HPU also had two top-five finishers in the men's heptathlon as
Evan Mills recorded a new personal best of 4,721 points while
Kolt Byers finished fifth with a score of 4,499. Mills' mark was good for the fifth-best total in program history.
In field event action,
Chris Van Niekerk finished second in the shot put with a mark of 16.82m while
Nick Lourenco and
Reid Holloway both finished in the top-10 in the pole vault. Lourenco finished fifth with a mark of 4.85m while Holloway posted a new personal best of 4.70m, good for seventh place.
On the women's side,
Ashley Jones broke the indoor school record in the 3,000m, set back in 2005. Her time of 9:34.54 is second overall in program history and won the event in Annapolis over the weekend.
Lindsey Ickes finished second (9:42.11) in the same event while
Paris Stankewich was third (10:01.33) and
Amber Schulz was fourth (10:08.88).
Anna Ritter also claimed gold in the 5,000m with a new personal-best time of 17:38.07.
In the 1,000m run,
Olive Allen was the top finisher with a personal best time of 2:57.54.
Camryn Harper finished third in 3:02.11 and
Joanna Poland finished fifth in 3:04.22 to round out another HPU dominant finish in a distance race.
Sydney Koker claimed gold in the high jump with a mark of 1.68m while
Alicia Dawson was third in the long jump with a mark of 5.89m.
In sprint races,
Ebba Ahman finished second in the 60m hurdle finals with a new personal best time of 8.70 while
Lindsay Cooper finished third in 8.86. Ahman posted another personal best in the 400m dash (57.82), good for fourth place while teammate
Marissa Blakely was the silver medalist with an HPU-best time of 56.87.
Ahman, Blakely, and Cooper joined
Dae'Nitra Hester to finish the day with a new indoor school record in the 4x400m relay, finishing second with a time of 3:49.95.
