CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Big South Conference announced the Big South Men's Soccer All-Decade Team presented by Hercules Tires on Thursday afternoon (June 4).
Johnny Fenwick and
Shawn Sloan were the High Point players selected to the All-Decade Team.
Shawn Sloan | Geneva, Ill. | 2009-2012
In 2009 Sloan was named Big South Freshman of the Year as well as First Team All-Big South. He led the team with six goals and was tied for the team lead with 14 points. He appeared in all 18 games while starting in 13 contests. In 2010 he was named First Team All-Big South, he was selected to the Big South All-Tournament Team. He was also honored as an ESPN Academic All- American. His junior year he was named First Team All-Big South and was selected as the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He had a team-best seven assists which were the third-most in the Big South. In his final year as a Panther, he was named First Team All-Big South for the fourth straight year. For the second year in the row, he was named the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the year. Sloan was drafted by the Columbus Crew in 2013. He made his professional debut in a substitute appearance in the international friendly against Wigan Athletic.
Johnny Fenwick | Newcastle upon Tyne, England | 2015-2018
In his first season as a Panther, he was named Second Team All-Big South and was selected to the Big South All-Freshman Team. He was part of an HPU defense that set a new HPU Div. I single-season record in goals against average and had eight shutouts. In 2016 he was named First Team All-Big South. His Junior year he entered the season as the Big South Co Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. He was named First Team All-Big South and was named to the Big South All-Tournament Team. He was also named to the United Soccer Coaches All-South Region third team. Fenwick fired shot that allowed
Siggi Benonysson to score the buzzer-beating goal off the rebound against Presbyterian to clinch the Big South Conference Regular Season Title. His senior season the team captain played every minute of the season. He received Second Team All American honors from United Soccer Coaches and received Third-Team All-American honors from College Soccer News. Fenwick was the 2018 Big South Defensive Player of the Year and earned his third straight year of First-Team Big South Honors. He was ranked No. 42 in the country by Top Drawer Soccer and 11th overall among defenders. He captained the HPU men's soccer program to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Fenwick is entering his second season in the USL Championship after a season with San Antonio FC, he is currently a member of the Vegas Lights.
High Point had the most nominations for the 2010-2019 Men's Soccer All Decade Team with 18 nominations.
Men's Soccer All-Decade Team candidates were determined based on being at least one of the following: 1) Was a multiple All-Conference honoree; 2) Was named an All-American; 3) Is a member of the Big South Conference Hall of Fame; 4) Student-athletes must be a college graduate or in good academic standing with their respective institution; 5) Won a Conference Championship as a coach and/or was voted Conference Coach of the Year. Candidates that participated in two different decades were placed in a specific decade based on consultation from member institutions and were listed under their primary position during their careers. Member institutions also had final determination in regards to the inclusion of student-athletes and coaches. Previous Men's Soccer All-Decade Teams were recognized for the years 1984-89, 1990-99, and 2000-09.
A 15-person committee of Big South Conference administrators served as the official voting panel to determine the All-Decade Team, with fan voting comprising 20 percent of the overall total.
