Â
LYNCHBURG, Va. – The High Point University women's basketball team is set for a Big South Championship semifinal showdown with No. 1 Liberty on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
Â
The Panthers (17-13) earned their spot in the semifinal with a dramatic victory over No. 5 Presbyterian on a last-second three-pointer by sophomore
Camryn Brown. Meanwhile, the Flames (22-9) cruised past Charleston Southern in Friday's first quarterfinal.
Â
All-Time Series with Liberty
The Flames own a 40-14 edge in the previous 54 meetings between these two programs.
Â
Season Series Against the Flames
Liberty earned a season sweep of the Panthers besting High Point in the Millis Center by a score of 65-42. The Flames then posted a come-from-behind 57-49 triumph over the Panthers a week ago.
Â
What to Watch
Liberty's depth could be an issue for the Panthers. HPU used seven players with juniors
Emma Bockrath,
Shea Morgan and
Lindsey Edwards all playing 40 minutes in Friday's victory over Presbyterian. Meanwhile, the Flames used 13 and none of their players played more than 27 minutes in their 27-point victory over Charleston Southern. That depth edge may have played a role the last time these two teams met. High Point built a 17-point lead in the third, but couldn't hold off the hard-charging Flames.
Â
Big South Championship Notes
• HPU played in back-to-back Big South Championship title games in 2013-14 and 2014-15, but haven't been back since. This is the Panthers' first trip to the semifinals since those trips to the title game.
Â
• The Purple & White are 5-6 all-time in the Big South Championship semifinals and have won their last three chances to qualify for the finals.
Â
• High Point is 18-9 against everyone other Big South in the postseason, but is 0-9 against the Flames.
Â
• Five of the seven Panthers to play on Friday scored their Big South Championship career highs in points.
Â
• The No. 4 seed has won the Big South Championship just one time (UNC Asheville in 2007). In total, 24 of the 31 titles wins have come from the tournament's top-two seeds.
Â
Championship Game
The winner of the first semifinal will take on the winner of No. 2 Radford and No. 3 UNC Asheville, which will be played at approximately 4:30.
