HPU freshman Cheyenne Parker posted career highs in both points (19) and rebounds (16) but the High Point University women's basketball team couldn't overcome a late surge by Gardner-Webb and took a 62-54 loss on Saturday afternoon at the Millis Center.

High Point fell to 7-10 overall and 1-3 in the Big South while Gardner-Webb improved to 11-6 overall and 3-1 in the league.

"This was two good team playing and one just made the plays down the stretch," head coach Tooey Loy said. "I thought the kids played hard, they executed well, you just have to make shots at the end of both halves. We got what we wanted it just came down to our inability to knock down shots in the last three or four minutes."

Along with Parker, junior forward Shamia Brown also recorded a double-double for the Panthers with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Monique Hudson led Gardner-Webb with 15 points and her sister, Dominique, nearly had a double-double with 11 points and nine boards.

HPU's Jurica Hargraves hit a three-pointer to open the game and the Panthers jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the opening minutes. HPU's lead was 18-10 when Parker hit a pair of free throws with 12:25 left in the first half before Gardner-Webb got some momentum. The Runnin' Bulldogs went on a 12-4 run that included three-pointers from both Hudson sisters to tie the game for the first time at 22-22. After a Parker layup, a Monique Hudson jumper and a free throw by Sandra Vaitkute gave Gardner-Webb its first lead of the game. The teams went back and forth before Gardner-Webb scored the final six points of the half to take a 33-29 lead into the break.

High Point began the second half on an 12-5 run to take a 41-38 lead into the first official timeout of the period. That included six points from Parker and was finished with a trey by Hargraves that gave the Panthers the lead. The teams split the next four buckets, with HPU's Brown draining the last to give HPU a 47-46 lead. Gardner-Webb held a 52-49 lead on a pair of Monique Hudson free throws before Parker hit a layup and drew a foul, draining the free throw to tie it back up.

After the 52-52 tie, Gardner-Webb was able to put some space between itself and High Point and led the rest of the way. Dominique Hudson converted a three-point play and, after scoreless possessions by both teams, Latroya Pope scored on a layup down low to make it 57-52. After a Panther turnover, Pope scored again to make it 59-52. A free throw and a layup by Catrina Green in the final minute gave the Runnin' Bulldogs the 62-54 victory.

The Panthers have a week off before hosting Coastal Carolina next Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Millis Center. HPU is 17-12 all-time against Coastal Carolina and has won six of the last seven games against the Chanticleers.
