The High Point University baseball team picked up its first road win of the season with a 15-4 win over Big South rival Winthrop Friday at The Winthrop Ballpark.
Kyle Mahoney went 4-4 with three RBI and
Jamie Serber pitched 5-1/3 innings, giving up three runs on nine hits to improve to 3-0 on the season. The Panthers are now 15-7 (2-2 BSC) while Winthrop falls to 12-9 (0-1 BSC).
“This is our first road victory, and even though we haven't played a lot on the road we never expect to come in here and get an easy game,” said head coach
Craig Cozart. “Winthrop is a quality club and this is a quality win but tonight is already over and we are focusing on the double header tomorrow.”
The Panthers put up four runs on four hits in the first inning after loading the bases with no outs.
Pablo Rosario led off the game with a double to right center on the first pitch from Winthrop starter Wade Newman.
Murray White IV was hit by a pitch and
Nate Roberts singled to load the bases for
Kyle Mahoney. Mahoney singled through the left side to score Rosario and keep the bases loaded.
Matt Gantner grounded to second, scoring White.
Max Fulginiti picked up two RBI with a double down the left field line and gave HPU a 4-0 lead.
Serber gave up one run on two hits in the bottom of the first. Winthrop's leadoff hitter Tyler Cook walked on four straight balls and came around to score on a fielder's choice.
Roberts made it a 6-1 game with his seventh home run of the season in the second inning, scoring White who had doubled to left field with two outs.
Serber rolled through the second and third innings giving up just one hit. In the third inning he set down the Eagles on just four pitches.
Gantner hit his 14th double of the season in the fourth inning, scoring White for the second run of the inning. HPU led 9-1 after four innings.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth Serber loaded the bases after already giving up two runs.
Spencer Andrews came out of the bullpen and got Tyler Cook to hit in to a 5-2-3 double play.
Andrew Bartlett extended his hit streak to 11 games with a single in the seventh inning. He came around to score on Rosario's sacrifice fly to center field making it a 12-3 game.
Andrews pitched a scoreless seventh inning and got one out in the eighth before allowing a run and putting runners on second and third.
Corey Swickle came out of the bullpen and got Tyler McBride to fly out to Gantner in left field on the first pitch. Swickle picked up his 32nd strikeout of the season when he set Eddie Rohan down swinging to end the eighth inning.
Steve Antolik doubled to lead off the ninth inning, extending his hitting streak to 12 games. He would score on a double by Bartlett.
White went 4-5 with four runs scored and Roberts went 4-6 with two RBI and three runs scored. Kyle Starnes pitched a perfect ninth inning.
HPU and Winthrop will play a double header on Saturday with the first game beginning at 2 p.m. due to rain in the forecast for Sunday.
