Liberty Knocks Off High Point 65-42

Box Score

Rachel Hammond (13) and Megan Frazee (4) combined to score the first 17 points for Liberty racing out to a 17-5 lead at the 13:26 mark in the first half and never looked back defeating High Point 65-42 Saturday afternoon at the Vine Center.

The Panthers had their worst shooting performance of the season hitting 25% (15-for-60) from the field including just two three-pointers (2-for-13).  Mackenzie Maier and Shamia Brown both scored eight points and pulled down five boards to pace HPU on the afternoon.  Maier added two blocks which ties her for the school's single-season record of 53.  She came into the contest leading the Big South with 2.6 blocks per game.  Jurica Hargraves, LaTeisha Dean and Maier all had two assists.

Hammond scored 15 of her career high 25 points in the first half to lead the Flames to a 33-14 halftime advantage.  For the game, she buried five treys, the first LU player to hit at least five triples in a contest since 2001.  She is also the first player to score over 20 points that isn't in the Frazee family (Megan, Molly, Moriah).  Megan Frazee recorded her fifth double-double of the season posting 14 points and 14 rebounds.  She also chipped in with four assists while teammates Amber Mays and Rachel McLeod each had a game high six dimes.

The Panthers came out of the second half looking to make things interesting reeling off the first six points to cut the lead to 13 with 16:47 to go in the contest.  The Hammond (7) and Megan Frazee (4) scored the next 11 points to give Liberty its' largest lead of the contest to that point (24), and thwart any ideas of a Panther comeback.

Amy Dodd hit HPU's first trifecta of the contest to end the streak.  The teams would go back-and-forth over the next several minutes before Liberty went on a 14-2 run capped off by a Megan Frazee triple with 4:30 remaining to give the host's their largest lead (33) of the game.

HPU would score the final 10 points of the game to give the final result.  Four different players (Dean, Dodd, Maier, Ashlee Samuels) scored to close out the contest.

The visitors were able to force 28 Liberty turnovers to their 16.  LU dominated on the glass holding a 58-33 advantage.  The loss drops the Panthers to 10-11 on the season and 6-2 in the Big South.  Liberty remains undefeated in conference play boasting a 7-0 mark and 13-7 overall.

High Point returns to the hardwood Saturday February 7 when they host Coastal Carolina at the Millis Athletic Center.  Tipoff is scheduled for 4 pm.  All fans are encouraged to wear white to the games part of the "White Out".
