Box Score The High Point University women's basketball team came up short on Wednesday night at the University of Arkansas, 63-46. HPU falls to 1-2 on the season while the Razorbacks improve to 2-0.
High Point was led by freshman Shamia Brown who posted her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Mackenzie Maier also tallied 11 points. Andrea Tucker scored nine points and pulled down nine rebounds.
For the Razorbacks Whitney Jones had a game-high 15 points while Ceira Rickets recorded 10 points. Ayana Brereton had a game-high 11 boards.
Both teams got off to a slow start, but the Razorbacks held a 12-9 advantage eight minutes into the contest. Arkansas went on a 15-1 run, which was bookended by three pointers from Brittney Richardson, and took its largest lead of the half, up 17 (27-10) at the 5:44. The Panthers responded and cut the lead to 10 with 2:11 remaining in the half off four straight points from Tucker, but the Razorbacks closed out the half with a 6-0 run to take 33-17 advantage into the break.
The Panthers came out strong in the second period, cutting the lead down to nine (40-31) at the 12:26 mark off a jumper from Tucker. Arkansas pulled back ahead by double digits, but the Panthers were still within striking distance, down 47-35 with 9:46 remaining. The Razorbacks responded though and went on a 10-2 run to take their largest lead of the contest, going on top by 20 at 6:54. The deficit proved too much as High Point would only come as close as 15 in the final minutes.
"I'm proud of our team's effort tonight, but we are disappointed with the outcome," said HPU head coach Tooey Loy. "This was a game we felt like we could come in and upset an SEC team. We got better tonight however and a game like this will help us to continue to get better into the future."
HPU and UA were even on the boards with Arkansas pulling down 49 to 48 by the Panthers. The Razorbacks however held a big advantage in forcing 25 turnovers while only turning the ball over 16 times.
The Panthers will have some time off before returning to action on Monday, Nov. 24 when they make the short trip to Greensboro to face the Spartans of UNCG. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
