Box Score Senior guard Leslie Cook connected for 17 points to lead a trio of Panthers in double figures as High Point defeated William & Mary, 74-62, today in women's basketball action. HPU improves to 2-2 on the season while W&M falls to 3-2.
Sophomore Caitlin Thys chipped in 16 points to tie her career high while Candyce Sellars added 12.
For the Tribe Dani Kell tied a career high to lead all scorers with 26 points. Robyn Barton had 16 while Kyra Kaylor added 12.
The Tribe jumped out to an early 5-0 lead to begin the game before a lay-up from Thys put the Panthers on the board at 18:56. William & Mary controlled most of the first half, going up bay as may as nine with 4:41 remaining with a three point from Barton. That would mark the largest lead of the game for the Tribe because High Point responded with a 13-0 run to close out the half including a three-pointer from Sellars in the final seconds to give the Panthers the 37-33 advantage going into the break.
Coming out of the intermission, High Point continued the run outscoring the Tribe 15-5 over the first five minutes of the half. Sellars hit three from behind the arc to highlight the run and give the Panthers the 52-38 lead at 15:21. The Tribe tried to fight back and pulled within nine with just over a minute left off a jumper from Kell, but that's as close as the Tribe would come in the second half as HPU held on for the win.
The two teams were even on rebounds with each pulling down 35. Cook led the Panthers with six boards while Kell and Kaylor led the Tribe with eight each. Defense was solid for HPU as the team forced 21 turnovers and scored 24 points off of turnovers to W&M's 11 forced turnovers and 14 points.
High Point will return to the court on Wednesday when the team hosts Davidson College. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Millis Athletic Center on the campus of High Point University.
