High Point dropped William & Mary tonight, 71-61 in women's basketball action. The Panthers improve to 9-3 on the season while the Tribe falls to 4-6.

 

Senior Katie O'Dell had double-double to lead the way with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Leslie Cook knocked down 12 points while Raven Truslow added 11.

 

For the Tribe Devin James led with 21 points. Kyra Kaylor also had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Lizzie Schiel added 10 points.

 

Both teams got off to a rough start in the first half with the score still in single digits (8-9, HPU) on both sides at the 10 minute mark.

 

High Point got things going on the offensive side late in the first half out scoring William & Mary 14-10 and took a 25-19 lead into the intermission.

 

The Panthers came out of the break strong with Caitlin Thys hitting a lay-up in the opening minute to increase the HPU lead, 27-19. William & Mary would respond shortly after when Tiara Cruse hit a lay-up of her own.

 

The teams traded baskets throughout the opening minutes of the second half until James hit a jumper at 13:54 to bring William & Mary within two (35-33). High Point would again pull ahead, but W&M would come back to tie the game at 41 all off a lay-up by James at 11:02.

 

That would be as close as the Tribe would get as High Point would go on a 7-4 run over the next five minutes. Going into the final minute High Point was up 58-64, but sealed the victory by hitting seven-of-10 from the charity stripe in the last seconds.

 

The Panthers held the Tribe to just 15-percent shooting from the floor during the first half and 30-percent overall. High Point shot 45-percent in the game. William & Mary led on the boards as well pulling down 50 while High Point grabbed 45.

 

HPU will return to action on Wednesday in Blacksburg, Va. against Virginia Tech. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
