Box Score

High Point's women's basketball team won its sixth-straight game and ended Liberty's 57-game Big South winning streak with a 62-53 victory over the Lady Flames Saturday in Lynchburg.

The Panthers improve to 14-11 (9-3 in the Big South), while the Lady Flames drop to 19-6 (11-1).

Charlena Martin and Candyce Sellars each scored 12 points to lead High Point past the Lady Flames. Katie O'Dell  added 10 points and five steals, while Katie Ralls also notched 10 points for the Panthers.

Katie Feenstra collected 22 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocks for LU, while Rima Margeviciute and Kristal Tharp each provided nine points.

Before it was broken, Liberty's 57-game conference streak was the longest in the nation. The Lady Flames had also won 33 straight Big South home contests since HPU knocked off Liberty on Feb. 17, 2001.

The contest had five lead changes until the 12:26 mark when Sarah Haak tossed in two points to give HPU the lead. In the last five minutes of the first half, the Panthers tallied a 10-0 run to head to the locker room up 33-17 at intermission.

In the opening minute of the second half, Martin put up a three-pointer to give High Point a 19-point lead, 36-17. The Lady Flames came within four points off a jumper from Tharp at the 6:10 mark, but O'Dell and Ralls each notched a three-pointer to give HPU an eight-point lead. LU didn't come within seven points the rest of the way.

HPU was outrebounded by the taller Lady Flames, 47-34, but the Panthers shot 94.4 percent from the free throw line (17-of-18), while LU shot 43.5 percent (10-of-23).

The Panthers return to action Wednesday night at Radford. Tip-off with the Highlanders is set for 7:00 pm in the Dedmon Center.
