Box Score Senior Katie O'Dell finished with a 21 point, 10 rebound double-double to lead High Point to an 89-87 victory over Western Carolina on Monday night in the Millis Athletic Center.
The Panthers improve to 5-3 on the season with their third straight win while the Catamounts fall to 0-8.
In addition to O'Dell, the Panthers' Candyce Sellars scored 15 while Raven Truslow added 13.
The Catamounts had four players in double figures with Teyawna Hardy led all scorers with 20 points. Chevon Keith added 12 while Monique Dawson and Lauren Powell had 11 and 10, respectively.
High Point held a slight edge in the first half, only relinquishing the lead once during the opening period. At the 8:30 mark WCU momentarily took the lead on a layup from Hardy before Sellars hit a three pointer to give High Point the lead for good. The Panthers took a 33-32 lead into the intermission.
The Panthers came out strong in the second half and increased their lead to seven when O'Dell hit a three pointer at the 18:14 mark, but the Catamounts would not go away and again got the difference back down to one off a layup by Amelia Miller at 15:22. High Point then went on a 13-3, 10 point run to pull the lead back to 11. The Catamounts would get no closer until the final minute.
Going into the final minute of the game the Panthers had a seven point lead, but the Catamounts were strong on the offensive side and cut the lead down to one, with fewer than five seconds remaining, off of back-to-back three pointers from Hardy and Keith. A foul that sent O'Dell to the free throw line in the final seconds would prove costly for WCU. O'Dell hit the first on a pair to give the Panthers the game final two point advantage.
High Point shot 60-percent from the field in the second half to Western Carolina's 45.2-percent. The Panthers held the advantage on the boards as well, out-rebounding the Catamounts 46-43. Western led in the free throw category with a 72-percent advantage over High Point's 57-percent.
