Women's Basketball Defeats Gardner-Webb, 73-60

Box Score The High Point University women's basketball team downed Atlantic Sun foe Gardner-Webb, 75-60 tonight in Boiling Springs.

HPU improves to 2-1 on the season while GWU falls to 0-4.

Leading scorer for the Panthers was senior Katie O'Dell with 23 points. Junior Candyce Sellars added in 22 of her own to mark a career high. Sellars started the game eight for eight from the floor. She finished the game going four of six from three point range and nine of 13 from the field.

High Point shot 44.5-percent from the field as a team including 56.3-percent from three point range. The Panthers also shot 93.3-percent from the free throw line.

For the Bulldogs Shameka Smith led with 19 points. Trisha Bennett and Brooke Wilkinson each added in nine.

On the boards O'Dell led the Panthers with nine rebounds while Tonya Tripp pulled down six. Smith also led the Bulldogs on the boards pulling down seven while Brittany Harmon grabbed six.

Gardner-Webb started the game strong and led until the 13 minute mark. A three pointer by Sellars at 13:03 pulled the Panthers ahead and HPU never looked back, leading by as many as 13 in the first half.

High Point was ahead 44-32 going into the intermission.

In the second half the Panthers continued to dominate on the offensive end and was ahead by 17 with just under nine minutes to play.

The Panthers played a highly defensive game, stealing the ball 12 times and forcing 19 Bulldog turnovers. High Point held Gardner-Webb to just 37-percent from the floor.

High Point will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 29 when UNC Greensboro visits Millis Athletic Center. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
