Women's Basketball Holds Off Gardner-Webb, 62-61

Candyce Sellars made a running jumper with one-tenth of a second left to give High Point's women's basketball team a 62-61 victory over in-state rival Gardner-Webb.

The Panthers (6-8, 1-0 Big South) won their second straight game, while the Bulldogs (5-9) have lost three in a row.

Katie O'Dell led High Point with 22 points, while Sellars tallied 15 points, five rebounds, and three steals.

HPU lead for most of the first half, until Jasmin Morris put up a three pointer to tie the game 26-26. The Panthers managed a few more points to grab the lead, 33-30, going into the locker room.

Bulldog forward Shameka Smith tallied the lone double-double of the game scoring a career-high 27 points and 15 rebounds (fifth double-double for the season).

High Point opened the second half on an 18-7 run, but watched it slip away as Gardner-Webb tied it up at 55-55 with 4:41 remaining on the clock. The contest came down to the final seconds. With five seconds to go Candyse Kelly hit a three-pointer to give the Bulldogs a one-point lead.

Without calling a time-out, Sellars drove the length of the court and hit a 10-foot jumper leaving one-tenth of a second left on the clock.

GWU will host Atlantic-Sun Conference foe Troy on Thursday at 6:00 pm in Boling Springs, N.C.

The Panthers will hit the road once more this time traveling to South Carolina to play a pair of Big South Conference rivals. HPU will face off against Charleston Southern on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 2:00 pm and then return to action on Monday, Jan. 24 to play Coastal Carolina at 7:00 pm.
