In a game that was close throughout, Longwood held off High Point, 63-59, Thursday night in non-conference women's basketball action at Willett Hall in Farmville, Va.

The Panthers (2-4) have dropped four straight following a pair of wins to open the season. Longwood evened its record at 4-4.

Charlena Martin and Katie O'Dell each scored 17 points to lead the Panthers. O'Dell also tallied 13 rebounds for a double-double. Candyce Sellars also scored in double figures (11 points) and notched five rebounds, three assists, and six steals for HPU. Emily Mills provided seven points and eight boards.

Catherine Dunn scored a career-high 19 points and added five rebounds and three assists to pace the Lancers. Amber Mason chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds. Ashley Mason and Keiva Small added nine points, while Merita Meldere grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.

Neither team led by more than six points in the contest. The Panthers scored six straight points to take a 14-11 lead on on buckets by Amber Manuel, Chan Ingram and two made free throws by Katie Ralls. But Longwood regained the lead went into intermission with a slight 31-28 edge.

The Panthers scored the the first five points of the second half to take the lead at 33-31 with 16:16 remaining in the contest. A three-pointer by Amber Mason gave the Lancers back a slight one-point lead, but two straight layups by High Point put the lead back into the Panthers' hands.

Longwood and High Point flip-flopped the lead multiple times over the next few minutes, but neither team could pull ahead by more than two points. With the Panthers up by one 55-54 with 5:24 remaining on the clock, both Dunn and Meldere made layups to give the Lancers their  largest lead of the second half at 58-55.

A layup by Mills with 33 seconds left in the game cut the lead to 58-57, but two free throws by Ashley Mason pushed LU's lead back to three. Martin broke through for a layup with 16 seconds to play to pull HPU within 60-59, and the Panthers fouled to send Meldere to the line. She made one free throw and missed another.

Following an HPU rebound, O'Dell attempted a three-pointer with 10 seconds left which would have given the Panthers a lead, but couldn't convert, and two free throws by Amber Mason sealed the win for the Lancers, a new NCAA Division I member.

Rebounds were even at 43-43. Longwood out-shot the Panthers (39 percent to 35 percent).

The Panthers stay on the road and visit local rival UNC Greensboro Saturday night at 7:00 pm.
