Women's Basketball Defeated by Longwood, 71-66

Marita Meldere scored a double double with 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead Longwood University in the 71-66 win over High Point in non-conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon in the Millis Center.

Charlena Martin scored a game-high 23 points and five assists in the loss.

High Point's record drops to 4-6 while Longwood improves to 8-5. This is the third loss in the row for the Panthers.

The first 10 minutes of the first half was a back and forth battle between both teams exchanging the lead. At the 9:08 mark, Longwood would make a charge and go on a  29-8 run capped off by a free throw from Abbey Freese (five points) just before the end of the half to go up 37-25 at the break. The Lancers scored 26 points in the paint to the Panthers 16. High Point only shot 28-percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes of play.

High Point came out of the locker room looking to turn their game around and did by chopping away at the lead throughout the entire second half behind Katie O'Dell's (18 points, eight rebounds) and Martin's 12 points while Tonya Tripp chipped in with 11. Tripp scored all her points in the second half of play. The Panthers out scored the visitors 26 to12 in the paint during the second half as well as shooting 65-percent from the floor.

Longwood had the lead up to as many as 16 points at the 13:14 mark when High Point came climbing back into the game. The Panthers closed the deficit to within three points (66-69) with about 7-seconds to go when the Lancers finally pulled away with two key free throws from Jessica Wilkerson (six points) during the final moments of the game.

The Lancers were also led by Ebony Smith and Ashley Mason with 14 and 11 points respectively in the win.

The Panthers will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Lexington, Kentucky to face non-conference foe the University of Kentucky Wildcats. The tip off is set for 7:00 pm.
