Box Score Lindsay Boyett scored 17 points and Ricka Spears had 13 points and 11 rebounds to power Birmingham-Southern to a 73-62 win over High Point Monday night at Bill Battle Coliseum.
Stacey Anthony added 13 points and Candace Byrd 12 for BSC (10-10), which defeated HPU (13-8) for the first time in four tries.
Misty Brockman led all scorers with 19 points, and Kate Jenner chipped in with 11 for High Point.
BSC jumped out to a 16-8 lead on a 3-pointer by Anthony with 13:36 left in the first period, but High Point responded with a 20-5 run to take a 28-21 lead with 4:02 left before intermission on a trey by Narelle Henry.
However, Birmingham-Southern answered with a series of long-range bombs, one by Anthony and three straight by Boyett, on its way to a 16-2 run that gave BSC a 37-30 halftime lead.
High Point cut the deficit to five on two occasions in the second half, but never got any closer. A bucket by April Brown put BSC up 47-36 at the 14:22 mark, and a pair of free throws by Anthony pushed the lead to 55-39 with 11 minutes to play.
Gina Rosser's basket got High Point to with eight at 65-57 with 1:18 left, but BSC hit six-of-eight free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Although High Point took 15 more shots than Birmingham-Southern, BSC enjoyed a 49-34 rebounding advantage.
HPU returns to action Friday night at home against Coastal Carolina. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm.
