Head Coach Lyndsey Boswell: "Overall, I'm really excited about the way the team came out tonight. I'm excited for them; they followed the game plan and executed early in the game. We talked a lot this week about our pace of play and just finding the standard that we wanted to be at, and a lot of that had to do with the discipline and level of accountability that these girls are still working towards. The first quarter was a really good reflection of all of those things."
Coming into the matchup, the Panthers were ranked sixth in the nation in shot percentage (.495) and they showed exactly why. HPU netted 11 goals in the first quarter for the second straight game while
Joy Coffey allowed one goal.
Jordan Miles, who eclipsed the 30-goal mark Wednesday, netted a first-quarter hat trick as
Pia Cavallaro and
Shannon Smith each had two apiece.
Allie Connally and
Kay Rosselli reached two goals each to start the second quarter as the Panthers took a 14-3 lead into half.
Ava Welsh started in the cage to begin the third and held the Blue Hose scoreless until the final minute of the game, while the offense posted seven more goals in the second half. Cavallaro netted her second hat trick of the season and
Reese Dowgiallo joined the scoring with two third-quarter goals. Miles added to her goal total in the third with her fourth score.
"Our team is extremely selfless. We love playing for each other and with each other," Miles said. "We got to play every player today and get different groups together, so our chemistry is building, especially in these games that we are able to grow even more and get new players on the field. It's fun to see it keep growing and continue to get better each day."
Esprit Cha opened the fourth quarter with her second goal, while rookie
Tatum Goettelmann paired her two career-first assists with her collegiate first goal.
Kierstin Hillis, the reigning Big South Freshman of the Week, followed with her third goal in as many games.
Rosselli had a season-high three assists in the first quarter; meanwhile
Mandy Brockamp and Cha had two alike Goettelman. Cavallaro matched her career-high three caused turnovers, while Brockamp and
Sami MacDonald had two.
Logan Tingley, Smith and MacDonald all had a pair of ground balls; meanwhile, Miles had seven draw controls and Rosselli had five.
