HPU Comeback Falls Short at Crown Classic

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The High Point University men's lacrosse team played against Jacksonville University at a neutral site in Charlotte for the second consecutive season. In a fourth quarter comeback attempt, Brayden Mayea led the Panthers with three back-to-back goals but coming up a goal short, HPU fell to the Dolphins, 10-9, Saturday afternoon.

Hats off to Jacksonville for getting the win," Head Coach Jon Torpey stated. "It was a hard fought game as it always is when our two teams meet. As for us I'm taking 100% of the blame for the loss. I did not put our team in the best position to succeed and I will fix this moving forward. I look forward to seeing how our guys respond in another quick turnaround game on Tuesday.

Site: American Legion Memorial Stadium
Score: High Point 9, Jacksonville 10
Records: High Point (4-4), Jacksonville (3-3)

The Panthers started strong in the first as Mayea recorded the first goal of the game. The Dolphins responded with a goal of their own. Corey O'Connor snuck one in with six seconds left of the first for a 2-1 lead. Jacksonville kicked it into high gear in the second, recording four goals while holding the Panthers to one for a 5-3 Dolphins advantage at the half.

After the break, Nick Rizzo showed some fancy footwork with a spin move to net the first goal of the third. Mayea found an opening not long after to even the score at 5's with help from Jack VanOverbeke, who registered his third assist of the game. Jacksonville quickly responded with a couple of goals to take the lead heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

The Dolphins continued their hot streak into the fourth, netting three more goals for a 10-5 lead with less than six minutes remaining. Mayea wasn't ready to give up and hit a hot streak of his own, netting three goals back-to-back-to-back to get within two. Zack Overend was a beast in the net, registering 12 saves against Jacksonville to keep the Panthers in play.

VanOverbeke, who had been more than generous with the ball thus far, decided it was his turn for glory as he sent the ball to the back of the net to get within one point away from Jacksonville with a minute and a half remaining.

Despite the electric momentum from HPU's 4-0 run, the Panthers couldn't quite find the equalizer in the final 90 seconds, resulting in a Dolphins win, 10-9.

Mayea led the team, scoring five of High Point's nine points with the help of VanOverbeke, who secured the assist for three of the five goals. VanOverbeke led the team in assists and shots as the senior clocked four assists and took 11 shots. Mayea was right behind VanOverbeke, registering nine attempts with five on goal.
