HIGH POINT, N.C. — The High Point University women's lacrosse team put together a total team effort Saturday afternoon as the Panthers toppled Campbell University, 16-11, for their first win of the season.
SITE: Vert Stadium
SCORE: High Point 16, Campbell 11
RECORDS: High Point (1-1), Campbell (0-2)
Head Coach Lyndsey Boswell: "Very selfless performance from the girls. A lot of hard work went into this win this week. I'm mostly proud of their focus and just their resiliency and the way they worked together. It was a total team effort; we had a lot of scorers and Joy (Coffey) was huge in the cage."
This matchup between the Camels and Panthers was the 15th all-time and the first out of conference. HPU continued its winning streak versus Campbell, winning its 14th overall and second consecutive as
Esprit Cha matched her career-high four goals she set a week ago.
Cha was impressive for the second straight game as the midfielder set a single-game career high in points (six), caused turnovers (four), and assists (two).
"Esprit has worked really hard to be in the position she's in right now," Boswell said. "She's a leader and a hard worker. She puts in the extra time off the field and I'm just really happy with the success that she's finding very early in her junior year."
Cha's dominant day was jumpstarted by her teammates as five different players scored in the first quarter. The Panthers built on the 5-2 lead behind three second-quarter goals from Cha herself. The junior's hat trick — paired with two goals from
Reese Dowgiallo — led the Panthers through 30 minutes offensively for the 9-3 lead.
On defense,
Joy Coffey showed out in net as she limited the Camels to three first-half goals and had a career-high eight saves. In all, the Panthers caused 13 turnovers and scooped 18 ground balls.
Sydney Martin joined Cha with a team and career-high four caused turnovers, while
Tatum Mehring scooped a career-high three ground balls to tie
Aryss Lindsey for a team high.
Six players netted multi-goal games as
Jordan Miles had three followed by two from Dowgiallo,
Mandy Brockamp Kay Rosselli and
Shannon Smith, while
Pia Cavallaro had one in the final seconds.
"I think as an offensive unit, we've been communicating more together, and we're really finding each other," Cha said, "and are playing to each other's strengths and I feel like that's been huge. And on the flip side, on defense, we've been working on our communication and have been putting in the work on practice. When we have fun, we are creative and make really cool things happen."
