Panthers, Hawks Set for Thursday Tangle to Open A10 Tournament

The High Point University men's lacrosse team begins Atlantic 10 Tournament play with a rematch of last Saturday's game against Saint Joseph's. The No. 4-seed Panthers and the No. 1-seed Hawks faceoff in the semifinal round of the tournament on Thursday evening in Richmond with the winner advancing to the tournament championship on Saturday afternoon.

Last Time Out
HPU fell to Saint Joseph's on Saturday, 17-11, at Vert Stadium. Jaxson Lamb led the Panthers with a career-high five goals on seven shots while Jack VanOverbeke registered six points on two goals and four assists. Grant Ammann led the defense with three caused turnovers and two ground balls. 
 
 
ACROSS THE BENCH
High Point vs. Saint Joseph's
  • The Panthers are 1-3 against the Hawks, with the most recent contest occurring less than a week ago.
  • Prior to last Saturday, the two teams had not played since early in the 2015 season.
  • Last weekend, HPU fell to SJU in Vert Stadium, 17-11.
  • After HPU took an 8-5 loss in a neutral site game in 2013, the Panthers rallied in 2014 to pick up a 9-7 win at Vert Stadium. The Hawks claimed the 2015 game by way of a 12-11 victory in Philadelphia.
 
About the Hawks
  • The Hawks finished the regular season with a 10-4 record and a perfect 5-0 in Atlantic 10 play.
  • Three of Saint Joseph's four losses have been to top-20 opponents and all occurred in the month of March:
    • Mar. 4 – L, 15-14 at No. 15 Johns Hopkins
    • Mar. 8 – L, 13-12 (OT) vs. No. 16 Penn
    • Mar. 25 – L, 12-9 vs. No. 4 Duke
  • The Hawks boast a balanced attack with three players registering more than 40 points this season: Carter Page (44G, 5A), Levi Anderson (37G, 11A), and Matt Bohmer (21G, 23A).
  • Carrying the second-highest faceoff win percentage in the country, the Hawks' face-off unit is led by Zach Cole at the X, who has won at a .624 (236-378) clip. Cole is also the nation's leader in ground balls per game (11.50).
  • Shayne Ryan started in goal last weekend for SJU, he leads the team with over 330 minutes played, 61 saves, and a .517 save percentage. He has posted a 5-1 record in goal for the Hawks.
  • Head coach Taylor Wray is in his 12th season at the helm for Saint Joseph's.
 
Ammann's Big Weekend Earns Second Weekly Accolade
Graduate student Grant Ammann picked up his second Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week award on Monday, April 24th. He led the Panthers with six caused turnovers and four ground balls, including three caused turnovers in the first quarter. The HPU defense also held the Bonnies to just four first-quarter shots, holding a 7-1 lead after the opening 15 minutes of play.
 
 
High Point Among Top-25 in NCAA Statistical Categories
As a team, HPU is among NCAA Division I top-25 programs in seven statistical categories through the regular season and is leading Atlantic 10 programs in five categories. HPU leads the nation in opponent clearing percentage at 0.764. The Panthers have also posted top-10 marks in three other categories including caused turnovers per game (5th, 10.33), assists per game (5th, 8.87), and points per game (8th, 23.27). Other top marks include scoring offense (12th, 14.40) and face-off winning percentage (21st, .546).
 
Five Panthers in NCAA DI Top-25 Statistical Categories
High Point has five individuals who rank in the top-25 through 14 games played. Graduate defender Grant Ammann is fourth across NCAA DI for caused turnovers per game (2.40) and leads the conference with the mark. Senior Jaxson Lamb is second in the A10 and 11th in the nation for shot percentage (.469) while junior attackman Brayden Mayea ranks third and 12th, respectively, in the same category (.456). Junior Jack VanOverbeke ranks 14th in NCAA DI for assists per game (2.20) and 22nd in points per game (4.47) and Collin Hoben is 22nd in ground balls per game (7.20).
 
 
VanOverbeke Cracks Single-Season Top-10 Assists, Top-15 Points
Junior Jack VanOverbeke is having a breakout season, posting 34 goals and 33 assists for 67 total points scored. His assists and points marks have etched his name in the HPU record book already this season at the conclusion of the regular season slate. His 33 assists are sixth among Panthers while his total points are fourth, passing Asher Nolting's 2018 season total.

Mayea Climbs Single-Season Goals Chart
Through the regular season, junior Brayden Mayea has posted 41 goals, a top-10 mark in program history. Mayea has notched three or more goals in nine of HPU's games this season after he tied his season-high five goals at St. Bonaventure last Saturday (April 22nd). In his first two seasons as a Panther, he posted 37 and 40 goals in 2021 and 2022, respectively. With two goals on Saturday, he became the second Panther to post 40 or more season goals twice in a career along with Dan Lomas in 2014 (42) and 2015 (43).

Trio of Panthers Tally 100-Career Points
Junior attackman Brayden Mayea hit 100-career points with five goals and an assist on February 17th at VMI. In his first three seasons at HPU, Mayea tallied 94 career points with 42 points as a freshman and 49 points in his sophomore season. Mayea was the fifth Panther to reach 100 career points. Senior midfielder Hunter Vines also reached the 100-point threshold on April 1st at UMass with four assists. Last season he posted 22 points, and he added 26 points as a junior. After a career day against Robert Morris with 10 points on four goals and six assists, junior Jack VanOverbeke also cracked the top-10. VanOverbeke sits at the sixth slot among HPU players with 95 career points, recording 61 points through 14 games this season.

Green Making Mark with Career Numbers
Senior Parker Green has played 48 career games in four years between the pipes for HPU, the third most among Panther goalies behind Austin Geisler (2013-15) and Tim Troutner Jr. (2016-2019). His 505 career saves are 14th among NCAA Division I goalies and his 48 games are tied for the eight-fewest among goalies in the top-15 for career saves. In NCAA DI, he is 12th for minutes played in-goal and 27th across all divisions. Green also ranks 27th in NCAA DI for saves per game, averaging 10.52 over his career.

High Point Joins Atlantic 10 in 2023
After spending eight seasons as a SoCon affiliate member, High Point University joined the Atlantic 10, announced at the end of last May as the conference added men's lacrosse to its list of sponsored sports. High Point and Hobart joined A-10 institutions UMass, Richmond, St. Bonaventure, and Saint Joseph's to make up the six-team league and fulfill the NCAA requirement for an automatic bid for postseason eligibility. The Atlantic 10 will be the third conference (Atlantic Sun, Southern Conference) HPU has played in for men's lacrosse as the program continues to reach new heights.
 
Mayea Named Preseason All-Conference Member
Junior attackman Brayden Mayea finished the 2022 season as a First Team All-SoCon honoree while claiming a pair of Player of the Week awards from the conference throughout the season. Mayea led HPU with 40 goals to go along with nine assists while tallying 35 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers. Ahead of the inaugural season of A-10 men's lacrosse, Mayea was listed as a Preseason All-Conference attackman.
