Brockcamp, Panthers Hand Camels First Big South Loss

Box Score BUIES CREEK, N.C. — The Panthers handed Campbell their first Big South loss of the year with an extraordinary performance Wednesday evening. Mandy Brockamp led the way offensively with a season-high four goals and an assist, while Mena Loescher and Esprit Cha each tallied hat tricks.

Score: High Point 15, Campbell 14
Records: High Point (7-9,6-2), Campbell (11-5, 7-1)

Coach Boswell: "I give a lot of credit to Campbell, they are very well-coached and we always know we will get their best game. Right now though, I couldn't be more proud of my girls tonight. These players showed resilience, fight and a level of mental toughness that I've been waiting to see from them all year. We had several players step up, and even though we weren't able to get them all through the box tonight, it was a complete team effort.

"Mandy was in her zone tonight and everything she touched turned into a big play. She can't do what she does without the support of the other middies but she stepped up big tonight. We are excited to get another conference win and look forward to celebrating our seniors this weekend at home in our final game of the regular season."

Brockamp opened up the Panther scoring, dodging through the eight and ripping one into the back of the net for her 12th goal of the season. It wasn't long until the Big South Conference's points leader, Mena Loescher, would score for herself, notching two in the back of the net.

Genovese, assisted by Loescher, would also net a goal to give the Panthers a 4-3 first quarter lead. Taylor Suplee was a dominant force with five saves and a caused turnover in just the first 15 minutes of play.

It was another Genovese goal to start the second quarter, followed by a goal from Cha after the Camels put on the pressure to take a 7-5 lead. Scudillo and Loescher tallied two caused turnovers to keep the score within reach and go into the halftime break with the deficit sitting at two.

Campbell scored just 40 seconds into the third quarter, but sophomore attacker Jordan Miles responded quickly off an assist from Pia Cavallaro

The Panthers went one-man down after a yellow card, but they did not let that affect their threatening offensive attack, as Brockamp contributed her second of the night.

For the ninth straight contest, Rosselli put her name in the scoring column to bring High Point within one and within the same minute, Cha added another tying it all up at 10. After her assist to Cha, Brockamp secured her third hat trick of the season to take the lead.

A scoreless five minutes was ended by two Campbell goals to end the third. Going into the fourth, it was a complete barnburner. Rosselli netted her second of the night and Cha scored a man-up goal to make it 14-13, Campbell with just under seven minutes left to play.

Loescher's 36th goal of the season was a huge one, tying it all up at 14 and just shortly after, Brockamp secured her season-high four goals with the go-ahead goal on the cusp of the two-minute mark. A game-changing play by graduate defender Jenna Kraft to cause a Campbell turnover solidified the victory for the Panthers.

"We expect to beat Campbell every year and we expect to beat all the teams in the Big South," the sophomore Brockamp said. "We've really been having some adversity this year and working really hard. This win means so much to us because we've been working for this. I think that was the closest we've played to 60 minutes all season and obviously this is going to help us in the standings. I don't think it's a surprise we beat them today — they gave us their best game and we gave them ours too."

Loescher and Cha ended the night with hat tricks and Mandy Brockamp notched a season-high four beauties. Genovese and Rosselli had yet another stellar performance with two goals each. On the defensive end, Suplee held down the fort with an astounding 12 saves and defenders Ava Scudillo and Sami MacDonald each contributed two caused turnovers. Jenna Kraft had the defensive play of the game with a caused turnover that would run the clock out and secure the win.

UP NEXT: The Panthers celebrate senior day this Saturday, April 29th at home. High Point will face-off against Gardner-Webb at 3:00 p.m.
