CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Three High Point University track and field athletes have earned recognition from the Big South, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon (April 19).
Terris Burton II and
Lindsay Cooper were named the men's and women's track athletes of the week, respectively, while
Chris Van Niekerk was named the men's field athlete.Â
Terris Burton, Men's Track Athlete of the Week
Burton won the men's 400m hurdles with a time of 52.13 seconds. His time now ranks 37th in the East Region with just over one month left in the regular season. Burton also ran for eighth place in the 110m high hurdles and on the Panther 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams.Â
Chris Van Niekerk, Men's Field Athlete of the Week
Van Niekerk won both the discus and the shot put on Saturday at HPU's Meet of Champions. His mark in the discus of 58.08m was over three meters further than his previous season best. Van Niekerk's mark won the event by over eight meters and ranks 12th in the East Region.Â
Lindsay Cooper, Women's Track Athlete of the Week
Cooper was another double winner for the Panthers on Saturday, sweeping the hurdle races at the Meet of Champions. Her time of 13.43 seconds (+2.8 wind) in the 100m hurdles moved her to 26th in the East while her career-best time of 59:47 seconds improved her standing to 43rd in the region as well. Cooper also helped the HPU 4x400m relay team to a second place finish.Â
