HPU Women's XC Rounds Out 2023 Season with Top-15 Finish at NCAA Regionals

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The High Point University women's cross country team capped off its season with a 14th place finish out of 34 teams at the NCAA Southeast Regionals Friday morning.

"I think today we left a lot on the table as a team," HPU Women's Cross Country Head Coach Remy Tamer said. "From a collection of individual performances, there weren't a lot of women who raced at their highest capabilities and they know that. So, of course, it resulted in a team score that I don't think we are happy with, however, for the returners, next year if they don't learn anything from this experience, that is the true failure. For the seniors who raced, Olive and Katie, I have no doubt in my mind that they left everything out there on the table. It probably still wasn't the best performance of their lifetime, but there was no shortage of passion from them.

"I think we have a lot to learn from the experience. I think the newer athletes understand the level of competition at the NCAA is more than what they get to see throughout the year and we have to level up with it. The expectations have never changed, but now they get a glimpse of what the greater world is in our sport outside of the Big South."

The Panthers were led by standout freshman Brianna Malone, who paced the team with a time of 20:49.7 to place 36th out of 243 runners. Graduate student Katie Taylor finished her final race in Purple and White with a time of 20:58.9, good for 52nd. Sophomore Charli Montalvo was third across the line for HPU, clocking a time of 21:36.6 to place 78th.

The Ritter sisters were the next two runners to finish for High Point. Elizabeth Ritter placed 109th with a time of 21:52.5, while Anna Ritter secured a time of 22:25.4 to place 135th. Olive Allen rounded out her time with HPU with a 146th place finish, clocking a time of 22:32.6. Joanna Poland rounded out High Point's lineup with a time of 23:41.0 to place 200th.
