CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Freshman Brianna Malone and graduate-student Katie Taylor pushed each other at the Pre-Nationals cross country meet Saturday morning, leading High Point University to a seventh-place finish.
"I thought today the women displayed the potential," HPU Women's Cross Country Head Coach
Remy Tamer said. "I think the women would agree, it was good, but not great; progress, but not perfect. And that's what we look for. We don't hope for perfect, what we do is we train for progress and today was progress. It wasn't spectacular, but everyone knows what they're capable of long term and I believe that these women are ready. They're ready for championship season. It really doesn't matter if they are or not, because its coming, however this is the group I want to be coaching when it comes time."
Taylor and Malone competed together during most of the race, finishing only three runners apart. Malone took the lead, finishing in the top-10 in eighth place, with a time of 21:06.7. Taylor finished shortly after in 12th place, posting a time of 21:15.4. Elizabeth Ritter was the third Panther across the line, finishing in 37th, clocking a time of 22:00.7. Charli Montalvo posted a time of 22:18.9, good for 54th place. Joanna Poland finished in 68th, clocking a time of 22:36.6.
