GREENVILLE, S.C -- The High Point University men's golf team improved by six strokes but dropped one place in the team standings after round two of the Furman Intercollegiate on Saturday (March 27) with a 292.
Â
Play was halted near the end of High Point's round Saturday afternoon for just over an hour after inclement weather rolled through Greenville, S.C. Two Panthers were able to battle through the elements to shoot even-par in the second round in
Brandon Einstein and
Drew Weary. Einstein ended the day in a tie for 16th place at two-over to be High Point's only golfer in the top-50.
Â
Weary led the team with three birdies on Saturday, bookending his round with red numbers. He birdied the par-4 first before taking a six on the par-5 second, followed by seven straight pars to get to the back at even. He took two bogeys and a birdie on his first three holes of the back before finishing his round with a birdie to end with an even-par 71.
Â
Einstein also bogeyed hole two and took another on 11 to put him at two-over on the day. He immediately recovered with a birdie on 12 and picked up another on 15 to get down to even and move up a spot on the individual leaderboard.
Â
HPU's other two counting scores on the day were a pair of four-over 75s from
Gregor Meyer and
Adam Hooker. Meyer started his round with a string of pars for the second day in a row, rattling off seven of them before taking back-to-back bogeys before the turn. He took three more in the first eight holes of the back before carding his only birdie of the day on 18.
Â
Hooker had two birdies on the day, picking them both up early. He bogeyed the first hole but immediately answered with a pair of birds to get into red numbers before dropping back to even at the turn with a bogey on nine. Four more bogeys awaited Hooker on the back, taking back-to-back bogeys on 11-12 and 17-18.
Â
Like Meyer,
Christian Castillo also picked up one birdie on the day, birdieing the par-4 13th as part of a round of 78.
Â
The Furman Intercollegiate will conclude tomorrow (March 28) with a 9 a.m. shotgun start, with the Panthers starting on holes 8-10.
