The #15 High Point University men's lacrosse team travels to Chapel Hill for a mid-week clash against #2 North Carolina on (Feb. 16). The Panthers are coming off of an impressive season-opening 21-15 win against Robert Morris on Saturday (Feb. 13). The Panthers find themselves in a familiar spot as they face a top-five team on national television on a Tuesday. This marks the seventh season in a row HPU has faced a ranked opponent during the middle of the week. In four of the seven seasons that ranked matchup took place on a Tuesday. The first face-off against the Tar Heels on Tuesday (Feb. 16) will be at 2 pm, on the ACC Network with Anish Shroff and Quint Kessenich on the call.
Matchup History
- This will be the fourth meeting between the two sides, HPU is seeking their first win against the Tar Heels.
- The last time the two met was in 2015 where UNC won 15-9. Matt Thistle led the offense that night (Feb. 10) with two goals and two assists.
- HPU and UNC will meet two times during the 2021 season both in Chapel Hill. After this game, the Panthers and Tar Heels will see each other again on February 27th.
Panther Notes
Rogers Shines in D-I Debut
The reigning Division III player of the year, Kevin Rogers dazzled in his D-I debut for HPU, Rogers scored four goals while adding two assists for six points.
Nolting, No DoubtÂ
Asher Nolting opened the 2021 season by putting on an impressive display as he led HPU in points against RMU with seven points. Nolting showed why he received the preseason All-American honors that he did leading up to the 2021 opener.
Welcome Back!
Dalton Sulver and Davis Sampere return to HPU for a fifth season as graduate students after last year's season ended early. Panthers fans were definitely happy to have them back on Saturday as the duo made an immediate impact on the 2021 season with their play. Sampere was 9-13 at the face-off 'X' while Sulver tied Rogers in goals on the day as he added four in the win.
Extra Mayo
Freshman Brayden Mayea did not shy away from the spotlight in his first game for HPU as he scored a hat-trick after starting at attack against RMU.
Setting the Tone
Junior Antonio Arcona picked up the win in the cage against the Colonials on Saturday. Arcona had ten saves on the day.
Buck is BackÂ
Devon Buckshot scored a hat-trick for the Panthers in the opening game of the season. After his three-goal performance Buckshot returns to the national stage after scoring five goals on ESPNU against UVA last season.
In Torpey We Trust
Jon Torpey in his tenth season as the head coach of the Panthers, Torpey has won 57 games in his career as the HPU head coach. This is the tenth anniversary of High Point Lacrosse.

Across the Bench
- No. 2 North Carolina enters the contest against HPU after defeating Denver on Super Bowl Sunday 24-13 and Jacksonville 18-7 last Saturday (Feb. 13).
- The Tar Heels are led on offense by Chris Gray, the senior already has ten goals on the season after just two games. Gray is the reigning ACC player of the week.
- UNC is led by national championship-winning coach Joe Breschi, who coached Torpey when he played at Ohio State.
