The High Point University's women's lacrosse team opens up the 2021 with two games at home this weekend after having their season come to an end early in 2020. The Panthers welcome Jacksonville on Friday (Feb. 12) and then will have a quick turnaround as they host Mercer on Sunday (Feb. 14).

Matchup History vs Jacksonville

  • The Panthers are 2-2 all-time against Jacksonville. HPU and JU are very familiar with each other as they both competed in the National Lacrosse Conference. 
  • HPU's first win against JU came in the NLC Tournament Championship game in 2011, 13-12 in overtime. 
  • The last time the two sides met was the 2012 NLC Championship game where Jacksonville won 19-6.

Jacksonville

  • The Dolphins are the defending A-SUN champions as they won it in 2019. The Dolphins won their first-ever NCAA tournament game in 2019. 
  • The Dolphins have had great success in the A-SUN as they have won six Atlantic Sun championships. 
  • Senior Sarah Elms led Jacksonville in scoring a season ago. In just four games Elms scored a team's best 18 goals. She also led the Dolphins in groundballs as she scooped up 10 during the 2020 season.
  • Mindy McCord is entering her 13th season as the head coach of Jacksonville. McCord is 217-112 in her career as a head coach. 

Matchup History vs Mercer

  • This will be the second time ever HPU has played against Mercer. HPU is 1-0 against the Bears.
  • Mercer traveled to Vert Stadium a season ago where HPU was victorious 18-11.
  • The game against Mercer on Sunday (Feb. 14) will be HPU's second straight game against a 2019 conference champion as Mercer won the last SOCON championship.

Mercer

  • The Bears enter the 2021 season as the defending SoCon champions after the 2020 season was ended early. 
  • The Bears leading scorer a season ago was Hailey Rhatigan, as a sophomore, she started in all seven contests for Mercer. She scored a team-best 23 goals and added 11 assists for a team-leading 34 points.
  • Mercer is coached by Samantha Eustace who is entering her sixth season as coach of the Bears. 

Panther Notes

  • The Panthers are led into the 2021 season by their three captains Ashley Britton, Abby Hormes, and Brielle Prouty. 
  • Coach Lyndsey Boswell enters her 11th season as the head coach for the Panthers. Bowell and the Panthers are seeking their fourth straight 2021 Big South title. 
  • Ashley Britton led HPU in scoring last season in the shortened season, Britton scored 12 goals while adding one assist for thirteen points.
  • Both Nicole Pugh and Abby Hormes led the Panthers in points in 2020 with 14 each.
  • For the third straight season, Hormes was named the Preseason Offensive Player of the year. Britton was selected as the Preseason Defensive Player of the year. This is the fourth straight season where High Point has swept the Preseason Player of the Year honors. 
  • Hormes, Britton, and Zeto were all selected to the 2021 Big South Preseason All-Conference Team. Hormes, Britton, and Zeto are earning All-Conference honors for the third straight season. 
  • HPU enters in the 2021 season after being picked as the favorite to win the Big South this season.
