High Point University women's basketball (5-4, 3-1 Big South) returns home to open the 2021 calendar year with a two-game series against Big South preseason favorites Campbell University (5-2, 2-0 Big South) on Monday and Tuesday (Jan. 4-5).

Matchup History

  • High Point and Campbell have met 30 times in HPU's Division I history entering 2020, with the Panthers holding a 19-11 record in the series so far.
  • HPU dominated the series before the Fighting Camels joined the Big South Conference and it's been much closer since, with the two teams going an even 9-9 in conference matchups.
  • Campbell got the better of the Purple and White in both games a year ago, winning the first conference game of the season 73-36 in Buies Creek and then taking a heartbreaker in the final second at the Millis Center, 68-66.

Across the Bench

  • Campbell is 5-2 on the year and is one of two Big South teams undefeated in conference play at 2-0 along with Charleston Southern.
  • The Fighting Camels had a bye to start the conference season but got things rolling last week with a pair of wins over Winthrop to enter Monday on a three-game winning streak just like the Panthers.
  • High Point and Campbell have one non-conference opponent in common this year as HPU defeated NC Central for its first victory of the season, 87-65, while the Fighting Camels lost to the Eagles in double overtime, 70-65.
  • Campbell is one of the best defensive teams in the country, entering Monday fifth in the nation in scoring defense (49.4 points per game allowed), 14th in opponent field goal percentage (.322), and 10th in three-point field goal defense (.215).
  • Shy Tuelle and Taya Bolden lead the way for the Camels, averaging 13.4 and 12.0 points per game, respectively.
  • Bolden also averages 10.1 rebounds per game for a double-double and ranks second in the conference in total rebounds and offensive rebounds (4.1 ORPG). That's good enough for 33rd in the country in total rebounds per game and 25th in offensive rebounds per game.

Panther Notes

Last Time Out

High Point made it three wins in a row after sweeping USC Upstate last week. Redshirt freshman Cydney Johnson had the best game of her career to date in the first game of the series, scoring 15 points thanks to four three-pointers in a career-best 23 minutes of action. Redshirt sophomore Jenson Edwards led the team in almost every category in game one, finishing with the most points, rebounds, assists, steals, and minutes played. In game two, HPU led an attack from beyond the arc, with three players finishing with four triples and the team with 16 - the second-most makes from deep this season. Junior Skyler Curran, Edwards, and sophomore Callie Scheier were the trio with four deep balls, matching career-bests for Edwards and Scheier.

Brick Wall of Chyna

Senior Chyna McMichel registered nine blocks in the two games against Upstate, recording a career-best five blocks on Wednesday and then followed it up with four more on Thursday. It was the first time since sophomore Amaria McNear blocked eight shots at Gardner-Webb a season ago that a Panther had recorded five blocks in a single game and only the second time it has happened in the last six seasons. McMichel is currently third in the conference in blocks and blocks per game with 14 total blocks for an average of 1.6 per game. Her 14 blocked shots put her 38th in the country.

Four for Four from Deep

During the series with Upstate, High Point had four players make four three-pointers in a game to help secure the sweep. Johnson set a career-best with four triples in Wednesday's game while Jenson Edwards, Curran, and Scheier, all connected from behind the arc four times in Thursday's victory to complete the sweep.

SHOOTER!

Jenson Edwards is one of 22 players in Division I that shoot above 50% from three-point land, entering Monday leading the conference and 13th in the nation with a 54.8% shooting percentage from deep.

Scheier's Year-End Send-Off

New Year's Eve 2020 wasn't the first time Scheier has ended the year with a barrage from deep as the sophomore also made four triples on the final day of 2019. She went 4-9 from behind the arc at Winthrop on Dec. 31 a season ago for all 12 of her points and has now scored a total of 24 points while shooting .500 with eight makes from behind the arc in the year's ultimate day.

Steph Curry or Skyler Curran?

Curran is in the top-10 in the country for three-pointers made and attempted this season. She's thrown up 73 shots from behind the arc - the third-most in the country - and has connected on 27 of them, the eighth-most in Division I.

Letting it Fly

After breaking the program record for three-pointers made in a single season last year, the Panthers continue to fire from deep, entering Monday in the top-10 in the country for three-pointers attempted, three-pointers made, and three-pointers per game. HPU makes an average of 10.8 long balls per game, good for sixth in the country, while the Purple and White's 97 total makes on 292 attempts rank fourth and second, respectively.

Three-Point Club Make Total: 97

Climbing the Ranks

Curran entered the season with 137 career three-pointers made, good enough for eighth-most in the program's Division I history, and moved up to fourth place with 154 in her career after draining nine against NC Wesleyan on Dec. 9 and now has 164 in her career. With Curran's 22 points against Upstate, she moved into 17th place on HPU's D1 scoring list with 866 career points, 38 away from taking over 16th and 134 shy of becoming the 14th Panther to score 1,000 points since High Point joined Division I.

Foremost Facilitator

Junior Jordan Edwards leads the conference in assists per game and total assists, dishing out 43 assists so far on the year for an average of 5.4 helpers each contest. That puts her 12th in the nation in total assists and 30th in the country in assists per game.

Ball Movement

The Panthers lead the Big South in assist to turnover ratio, dishing out an average of .87 assists to each turnover. High Point also leads the conference in total assists with 122 on the year, good enough for 54th in the country.

A Better EDucation

Jordan and Jenson Edwards are both in the top-three in the Big South in three different assist categories. Jordan leads the Big South in total assists and assists per game, with 43 and 5.4, respectively, and is second in assist to turnover ratio with a mark of 2.05. Jenson is third in all three categories with 34 total assists for an average of 3.8 APG and an assist to turnover ratio of 1.79.

Two at the Top

Curran is third in the conference in scoring with an average of 17.0 points per game this season. Teammate Jenson Edwards joins her in the top-five in the conference and is right behind her in fourth with an average of 15.0 PPG.

Getting Their Money's Worth

HPU took 40 free throws against NC Central on Dec. 7 and converted on 30 of them, tied for the second-most attempts in school history and four shy of matching the record for makes. Nationally, the 30 makes are tied for the 10th-most in all of Division I this season. On the season, High Point shoots 78.9% from the stripe to lead the conference and sit 14th in the country.

You Don't Make It, She Takes It

Curran leads the conference in defensive rebounds per game, snagging an average of 6.8 opponent misses off the glass per game.

Two-For-One

For the second straight season, Big South Conference play will see High Point play each team in a 20-game round-robin schedule. Differing from last year is the format, which will be back-to-back contests against the same opponent at the same location on consecutive days this year, as opposed to the traditional home-and-home format used last year.

Up Next: High Point heads back out on the road this weekend, traveling to Rock Hill, S.C to play Winthrop on Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 9-10). Then the Panthers have a bye week and are off until heading to Presbyterian on Jan. 22-23.
