Broschart Promoted to Associate Head Coach

HIGH POINT, N.C.-- On Monday, July 13, High Point University men's lacrosse Head Coach Jon Torpey announced the promotion of assistant Ken Broschart to associate head coach.

"Kenny Broschart's promotion to associate head coach is long overdue," head coach Jon Torpey said. "Kenny's addiction to improvement and passion for our program and the sport of lacrosse is absolutely elite. Over the last three years, Kenny has taken our program to new heights both on and off the field. Undoubtedly his greatest asset is his ability to do anything in his power to help our young men grow into the best versions of themselves. The love Coach Kenny has for our young men and the bond of trust he builds with them is very special. Kenny will not be outworked, his thirst for knowledge is unmatched and all the while he does his job with an incredibly humble demeanor. For the last 3 years, Kenny has exceeded every expectation we had for him coming in. Our staff, our young men, our alumni, and our parents are blessed to have him on our side."

Broschart joined the High Point staff in August of 2017. In 2019 as offensive coordinator, Broschart helped lead the offense to its most productive season in program history. The offense under Broschart broke records for most points (354), goals (232), assists (122), and best shot percentage (.340) in a single season. His first season as a Panther assistant was in 2018 when High Point attackmen Asher Nolting and Sean Coughlin were in their first season as freshmen. Coughlin has scored 18 goals and recorded five assists with Broschart as his offensive coordinator.

"Throughout my three years, going on four, at High Point University, I have had the privilege to witness and learn from one of the most devoted coaches in college lacrosse," Coughlin said. "Coach Broschart exemplifies relentless hard work, passion, and love for the game. The man makes you want to work harder and put more time into yourself and others on and off the field. He is not just a 'lacrosse coach,' he is a true friend, leader, and mentor to all of the guys on the team. 'Extra and hard work pays off' as he says. Congratulations, no one deserves this more."

With Broschart as his offensive coordinator in 2019, Nolting won the SoCon Player of the Year award as he scored 44 goals and added 48 assists for 92 total points on the season. Nolting is also the first player in program history to be named a Tewaaraton Award Nominee. Nolting had 11 goals and 22 assists in 2020's abbreviated season, his 33 points were the 13th most in the nation.

"I've had the pleasure to have Coach Broschart on the staff every year at HPU," Nolting said. "He is extremely dedicated to his craft and is always looking for that something that can make our team that much more successful. He's always willing to work with us and push us to get the best out of us and I wouldn't be where I am now without Coach Broschart and can't think of someone more deserving of the job."

Dalton Sulver has had two strong years under Broschart, the Kingwood, Texas native scored 21 goals in 2019 and had already scored 10 goals in the seven contests he appeared in during the 2020 season.

"In the three years since arriving at High Point, I have seen (Coach) Ken Broschart grow tremendously as a coach and as a mentor," Sulver said. "He relentlessly pursues improvement in all facets of his life and dedicates more time to this program than even he might like to admit. He holds us to a high standard but leads by example giving us his best every day. His collaborative style of coaching allows the older players the experience of leading the incoming guys which contributes to our player-driven culture. I'm looking forward to playing for him again this coming season!"

Before arriving at HPU Broschart spent ten years at Michigan. He became the defensive coordinator as the program transitioned to NCAA competition in 2011. Broschart was an assistant on the staff of John Paul. Paul was the head coach at Michigan from 98-17. Paul was also the head coach last season for the Premier Lacrosse League's Atlas LC.

"Ken is an incredible coach, father, husband, and friend," Paul said. "He played an enormous role in getting the Michigan program to where it is today, and in my own personal development. High Point and Coach Torpey are fortunate to have him."

Broschart's first job in coaching came at his alma mater New York Tech. Before joining the New York Tech staff, Broschart was a three-time USILA All-America defenseman from 1997-2001. During his playing career, the Bears posted an impressive 40-12 record. Broschart played for and coached on the staff of the legendary Jack Kaley who is a National Lacrosse Hall of Famer. He is the only coach in NYIT lacrosse history to win an NCAA National Championship- a feat which he accomplished four times (1997, 2003, 2005 and 2008). Kaley's bears were 58-16 in conference play furring his career which is the highest career winning percentage in NCAA Division I and II lacrosse history.

"Ken had a strong work ethic, he was a great leader, he was very vocal, I'm sure he is that way as a coach, he was always talking and he was that way as a player and as a coach for us," coach Kaley said. "I would have to say that our success those two years that we were very lean offensively, we were able to hold our own because of Kenny. He has a coach's personality, he is very positive but he is not afraid to tell someone if they are screwing up. It does not make a difference what phase he is in charge of he is just a natural coach. He left New York Tech in 2002, he was a graduate assistant for us and he's been coaching ever since. I hope he takes after his old coach and coaches for 54 years. I'm so happy, I know he loves it at High Point and he loves working with Torpey it's a good combination. When you have a coaching staff that works together and believes in each other, only good things happen."
