The High Point University women's lacrosse team (0-0, 0-0 Big South) welcomes Mercer (0-0, 0-0 SoCon) for its 2020 season opener on Friday (Feb. 7) at Vert Stadium.
In anticipation of a capacity crowd for Friday's game, High Point University will be providing shuttles from the College Village Shopping Center to Vert Stadium. We are encouraging fans to take advantage of this service. The Shuttles will start at 5 p.m.
Matchup History
- This will be the first ever meeting between the schools in Women's Lacrosse
- High Point is 4-0 against Southern Conference foes, winning its last matchup in 2019, 21-12 against Furman
- Mercer is 7-9 all-time against the Big South, with the most recent matchup just last season, a 12-14 loss at Winthrop.
Panther Notes
- The 2020 season will begin Lyndsey Boswell's tenth season at head coach for the Panthers.
- HPU is 123-50 under Coach Boswell's direction, including three straight NCAA Tournament appearances and three straight Big South regular season and tournament championships.
- After another dominating run through the Big South in 2019, the Panthers were unanimously voted as preseason favorites for the Big South conference this year. This is the first time a team has ever been unanimously chosen and the Panthers seventh time being a preseason favorite.
- High Point enters the season ranked No. 25 by the IWCLA, its highest ranking entering the season in program history.
- High Point returns eight All-Conference performers from a season ago that led one of the most balanced teams in the country. Up front, Rachel Foster and Big South Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Abby Hormes lead the charge. High Point was fifth in the country in points per game with 23.7 in large part to the duos combined 156-point season.
- The Panthers return the Big South Defensive Player of the Year in Meredith Chapman. She and junior goalkeeper Sarah Zeto anchored down a High Point defense that was eleventh in the country in goals allowed per game (9).
Across the Bench
- Mercer was selected to finish first in the SoCon after going 10-9 and winning the 2019 SoCon regular season championship
- The Bears are under the direction of fifth year head coach Samantha Eustace. She's led Mercer to back to back NCAA Tournament appearances and made the program a SoCon powerhouse
- They return all-conference honoree Hailey Rhatigan. The sophomore attacker returns after a stellar freshman season that saw her break Mercer's single-season record for goals with 62
