The High Point University men's lacrosse team (1-3) ends its two-game road trip with a midweek showdown against the defending national champions, No. 6-ranked Virginia (2-1) on Tuesday evening (Feb. 25) . The game will be televised on ESPNU, it's ESPN's first live lacrosse game on national television this season.
Matchup History
- High Point will be seeking its third win over UVA in five years.
- HPU beat UVA 14-13 last season in Klockner Stadium. Asher Nolting scored four goals in the win. Nine Panthers scored in the game. The closing sequence featured a save off of a close shot by Tim Troutner Jr to clinch the game for HPU.
- This will be the fifth time High Point has faced UVA, the all-time series is tied 2-2.
Panther Notes
- This will be the fifth game High Point has played this season, four of their five opponents have been ranked in the top 15.
- Tyler Stinson had a big day against Cornell, scoring two goals and adding two assists. Stinson had four points in the game which tied Nolting for the team high against Cornell. Sean Coughlin added two goals against the Big Red as well.
- Dalton Sulver scored against Cornell on Sunday he has scored in every game he has played in this season.
- Nolting was selected to the Tewaaraton watch list for the third year in a row. The only Panther to be selected three times to the Tewaaraton watch list is Dan Lomas. Three Panthers have received this honor that list includes Nolting, Lomas, and Tim Troutner Jr.
- Freshman Tyler Hendrycks leads the team in goals scored with eight heading into the fifth game of the season.
- HPU is first in the SOCON in man-up goals with twelve on the season. The Panthers are averaging 3 man-up goals per contest.
- Nolting has recorded a point in every game he played in at HPU (34 games). His 34-game streak ranks 14th in the nation. He has 173 points during this steak. He is also currently on a 20-game goal streak with 50 goals scored during this stretch. Nolting is the SOCON's active leader in points.
- Davis Sampere won a season-high 19 faceoffs and picked up 10 grounds balls against the Dragons. Sampere's 19 wins ranks for 14th in the country for faceoff wins in a single game.
- Several Panthers picked up their first goal of the season to help HPU secure the win against Drexel including Mitchel Snyder, Nick Murphy, and Devon Buckshot. It was Buckshot and Murphy's first goals of their career.
- Parker Green's 21 saves opening weekend is still the most saves in a single game by any goalie this season in Division I lacrosse. He has 57 saves on the season.
- According to NCAA Strength of Schedule, HPU has the 14th toughest schedule in the nation this season.
- The Panthers had twelve players score a goal in the win against Drexel on Saturday with four scoring multiple goals.
- High Point's roster features players from 21 states and provinces which is tied for second for most states and provinces represented in all of Division I lacrosse. This list includes California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Ontario, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Vermont.
Across the Bench
- No. 6 Virginia enters the midweek matchup following a 16-12 loss to Princeton on Saturday. The win launched Princeton to #8 ranking.
- Junior Matt Moore leads the Cavaliers in goals scored this season with eight on the year. Michael Kraus and Ian Laviano are tied for second as each has six goals this season.
- Lars Tiffany enters his fourth season as the head coach of UVA following a national championship season with the Hoos. Tiffany's record at UVA is 37-16.
- Virginia had four players selected to the Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List. Dox Aitken, Jared Conners, Michael Kraus, and Matt Moore represented the cavaliers on this year's watch list.
