History vs. North Carolina A&T: High Point and North Carolina A&T have met fairly frequently in previous seasons with HPU owning a 22-11 edge in the series since 2000. High Point has won five straight games against the Aggies dating back to the 2014 season, including a 10-3 triumph on Feb. 21
The Aggies are making their first trip to Williard Stadium since 2015, an 8-3 triumph for the Panthers on Mar. 17.
The Aggies: North Carolina A&T also swept its weekend set, dispatching of conference foe Alabama A&M. A&T has won eight of its last 11 games and is looking to avenge a 10-3 loss to the Panthers back on Feb. 21.
A&T is led offensively by AJ Hunt, who is hitting .349 with 13 extra-base hits and 21 RBI. The Aggies are hitting .267 as a team and have posted a solid team ERA of 3.86.
About the Weekend: HPU dropped its first conference series of the year, losing two of three over the weekend to Liberty at Williard Stadium. The Flames jumped out to a 6-0 lead on Friday night before finishing off an 18-8 triumph. The Panthers responded with a 9-1 victory on Saturday, scoring seven runs in the first three innings.
Sunday's rubber game was a one-run game heading to the sixth before a critical error opened the floodgates for Liberty in an 8-3 win. HPU is still tied for second in the Big South standings.
Wells Named Freshman of the Week...Again: For the second straight week, and third time this season, freshman
Tanner Wells was named the Big South Freshman of the Week on Monday. Wells was 6-for-15 (.400) with a double, three runs scored and two RBI while positing solid SLG (.467) and OBP (.412). He has now hit safely in eight consecutive games, including six multi-hit performances that have raised his batting average 52 points to .344, the second-highest on the team.
He joins senior
Austen Zente (Player of the Week, Apr. 9), senior
Rion Murrah (Relief Pitcher of the Week, Apr. 2), freshman
Travis Holt (Freshman of the Week, 3/26), senior
Jordan Sergent (Player of the Week, 3/19), and junior
Cooper Jeffers (Relief Pitcher of the Week, 3/12), as High Point's recipient of a weekly award in the last seven weeks.
Bomb Squad: High Point's bats were held in check last week with just one home run in four games. The Panthers saw their streak of eight straight games with a home run snapped on Tuesday, having belted 23 dingers in those prior eight games.
HPU continues to leads the Big South and ranks 19th nationally in homers this year with 45, including 30 against the Big South in 18 games. The Panthers started slow, hitting only three homers in the first 13 games, but have struck for 42 blasts in the last 26 contests.
High Point has surpassed its total from last year (43) and is 11 shy of the Div. I school record (56) set in 2010. The all-time record is 77 set by the 1975 squad.
Lean on Lee: Senior
Hunter Lee saw his career-best 28-game hitting streak come to an end on Friday, four games shy of tying the all-time school record. Lee's streak was the second-longest streak in the nation this year (Jameson Hannah, Dallas Baptist, 35). During the stretch, Lee was 47-for-113 (.416) with 15 multi-hit games (nine of the last 12) and 28 RBI. He has now hit safely in 36 of 39 games this year and is still riding a 31-game on-base streak, reaching safely three times via walk on Friday and once by a free pass on Sunday.
It Starts At The Top: Senior
Austen Zente missed four games from 3/10-16 after colliding with the wall in HPU's victory over Coastal Carolina on 3/9. Since his return on March 17, Zente has been on fire, hitting .386 (34-for-88) with four doubles, a triple, nine home runs, 33 runs scored, and 23 RBI. Zente has hit safely in 20 of his last 22 games and had scored at least one run in 20 of the 22 contests as well.
This year, Zente has scored a team-high 40 runs in 85 times on base, a 47.1% success rate. Since returning from injury, though, Zente has reached base 59 times in 22 games and scored a preposterous 33 times (55.9% success rate).
Dunbar Digs the Home Confines: Junior
Conner Dunbar posted a strong weekend against Liberty, going 5-for-7 with a double, two runs scored, two RBI, and four walks. Dunbar has loved hitting at Williard Stadium this year, batting .407 (24-for-59) in 18 home games.
Dunbar is the only Panther to start all 39 games this year and has started the last 92 games at shortstop for HPU.
Among The Best: Senior
Carson Jackson laced a leadoff double in the second inning Sunday, tying the all-time school record with his 52nd two-bagger. In addition to his school-record total, Jackson ranks among HPU's top 10 in hits (3rd), RBI (4th), at-bats (5th), runs (6th), and home runs (10th).
Going Streaking: Senior
Jordan Sergent (9 games) and freshman
Tanner Wells (8) enter this mid-week both riding career-best hitting streaks.
Up Next: HPU will take the weekend off to focus on final exams. The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, May 1 when they host Wake Forest at 6 p.m. High Point dives back into Big South play with a three-game series at first place Campbell from May 4-6.
