HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University men's lacrosse team is back on the road this weekend to take on St. John's at noon on Saturday.
Â
The contest wraps up a tough five-games-in-16-days stretch for the Panthers (0-4), which included three top-10 foes. Meanwhile, the Red Storm is coming off a 14-12 victory over Hartford to even its record at 1-1.
Â
Quick Hitters
• Freshman
Asher Nolting has 15 points so far this spring after a five-point performance on Tuesday against No. 6 Virginia. The attackman's 15 points are the most by a Panther through four career games in the program's history.
Â
• Nolting has tallied three points in all four games, which is the longest such streak by a freshman at history. It also is the longest streak since Michael LeClair in April of 2016.
• Nolting is tied for 50th in the nation and fourth in the Southern Conference scoring 3.75 points per game. That is the sixth-best per game average by a freshman this year.
Â
• For the first time in his career, senior
Connor Robinson is coming off back-to-back hat tricks. The New Westminster, British Columbia native scored four goals against Maryland before tallying three and an assist against Virginia.
Â
• Led by Robinson's 10 goals, HPU's four Canadians have combined for 18 of the team's 37 goals this season. Senior
Chris Young has five while freshman
Tyler Stinson has added three. It's just a matter of time before,
Adam Dickson, joins them having five shots on goal through four games this year.
Â
• Seven of the 12 Panthers to score a goal this year either missed the 2018 campaign or are freshmen this year.
Â
• High Point's early season schedule has featured three top-six foes and Georgetown, who is receiving votes in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. St. John's in the first team the Panthers have played this season with a loss to its name. Duke, Georgetown, Virginia and Maryland are a combined 13-0.
Â
• Only five players nationally have scored more man-up goals than Stinson's two so far this spring. Both of his EMO goals came in Tuesday's contest with Virginia.
Â
• After allowing Maryland to go 4-of-4 in man-up opportunities in the first quarter last Saturday, HPU has held the Terrapins (1-of-4) and Virginia (0-of-4) to 1-of-8 in EMOs over the last seven quarters.
Â
• Sophomore
Davis Sampere ranks 16th in the nation picking up 6.25 ground balls per game as the Panthers rank 29th in ground balls per game (28.0). That's up from last season's average of 23.3, which ranked 65th nationally.
Â
• HPU's goalkeeper rotation of junior
Tim Troutner Jr. and senior
Zach Tuell have combined for 11.75 saves per game, which ranks 14th in the nation.
Â
• High Point is 11-26 all-time in road games. This is HPU's third road game against a Big East team (0-2).
Â
All-Time Series with St. John's
The Panthers and Red Storm have only met once with the Purple & White coming away with the win.
Â
All-Time Mark Against the Big East
Over the past three seasons the Panthers have split home-and-homes with Providence and Georgetown winning at home and losing on the road. Along with the win against the Red Storm last year, HPU fell to Marquette in 2014 to provide a 3-3 mark all-time against the Big East.
Â
Last Time They Met
HPU trailed 5-4 at the break, but scored 10 straight including three from
Connor Robinson en route to a 15-6 victory. Meanwhile,
Colin Zimmerman tallied two goals while
Tim Troutner Jr. notched nine saves.
Â
Showing Improvement
• Last year the Panthers ranked 69th in the nation in face-off winning percentage (.339). Led by
Davis Sampere's effort at the midfield dot, High Point is up to .475, which ranks 42nd nationally.
Â
• Last spring, HPU ranked 65th in ground balls per game and only won the ground ball battle in only one contest. This year, High Point is up to 29th nationally.
Â
• The Purple & White allowed goals on seven of their first 12 man-down situations this season. However, the team has responded limiting opponents to one goal in the last eight man-down scenarios. Overall, the team's man-down unit is 42nd in the nation (.600). HPU was 62nd in 2017 (.500).
Â
Next Up
The Panthers are back on the road next Saturday when they take on Robert Morris in Moon Township, Pa. Then the team takes the week off before opening Southern Conference play.
