HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University men's lacrosse team welcomes its second straight top-10 foe to Vert Stadium on Tuesday night when Virginia comes to the Triad.
Â
The Panthers (0-3) nearly erased a 10-3 deficit on Saturday against Maryland before falling 16-14 at home to the defending national champions. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers (2-0) have bested Loyola (Md.) and Drexel this season while climbing to No. 6 in the Inside Lacrosse media poll.
Â
Quick Hitters
• Freshman
Asher Nolting has 10 points (5g, 5a) to tie Dan Lomas (10g) for the most points through three career games in High Point history. Lomas owns the top mark for points through four career games with 11.
Â
• Senior
Connor Robinson's four goals against Maryland moved him into fourth in HPU's career points rankings. He's also fourth in career goals scored with 46 during his time in the Purple & White.
Â
• A season after going 17-of-46 on face-offs, sophomore
Davis Sampere has won 34-of-63 (.540) through three games this spring. That includes going 17-of-31 against Maryland's Austin Henningson who entered Saturday's game winning at a 61 percent clip in the Terrapins' first two outings.
Â
• Despite only taking multiple shots nine times during his time in the Purple & White, senior
Chris Young has six multi-goal performances including two this season.
Â
Â
• Staying out of the penalty box will be key for the Purple & White on Tuesday night. The Cavaliers are 3-of-5 in EMOs this year after Maryland scored four of its six first-quarter goals with its man-up unit on the field.
• Only Providence, Holy Cross and Mount Saint Mary's are averaging more than High Point's 4.33 penalty minutes per game so far this spring.
Â
• Junior
Tim Troutner Jr. has made 34 saves in his two meetings against Virginia. As a freshman he made 15 stops in a winning effort while adding 19 in last year's setback.
Â
• HPU will be looking for a faster start on Tuesday as the team has been outscored 17-3 in the first quarter in 2018.
Â
• With Virginia entering Tuesday night ranked No. 6 in the Inside Lacrosse media poll, HPU will have played three of the top six in the poll through the first 13 days of its season. The team's other opponent, Georgetown, is receiving votes in the poll as well.
Â
• High Point is 21-16 all-time playing in Vert Stadium. That includes a 13-11 record against non-conference foes.
Â
• High Point is 3-14 all-time against ranked teams defeating Towson in 2013, Richmond in 2015 and Virginia in 2016. The No. 10 Cavaliers were the highest-ranked foe the Panthers have ever defeated.
Â
• The 14 goals scored by the Panthers on Saturday were the most allowed by the Terrapins in a regular season game since John Tillman took the reigns in 2011.
Â
Top NLL Prospect
Connor Robinson, a native of New Westminster, British Columbia, is considered by Inside Lacrosse to be the top prospect in the 2018 National Lacrosse League draft. In his final year at the junior level in Canada, Robinson was the league MVP and led the BCJALL in scoring.
Â
Freshmen on the Worldwide Scene
Freshmen
Taylor Acra and
Isaac Newland were both selected to their respective national teams. Acra (Greece) and Newland (Jamaica) will compete with their teams in the 2018 FIL World Lacrosse Championships to be held in Netanya, Israel in July.
Â
All-Time Series with Virginia
High Point has played at Virginia in each of the past two seasons. The Panthers claimed the first meeting, but the Cavaliers evened the series at 1-1 last February.
Â
All-Time Mark Against the ACC
High Point has amassed a 1-9 mark against current members of the Atlantic Coastal Conference. The team is 1-1 against Virginia, 0-5 versus Duke and 0-3 when playing North Carolina. This year the Panthers fell at No. 1 Duke by an 18-6 margin.
Â
Last Time They Met
Despite a 10-0 run for Virginia through the middle of the contest, High Point mounted a second-half surge behind three goals and an assist from
Jason Ashwood to pull within five at 15-10 before falling 18-12. Adding to Ashwood's day,
Connor Robinson scored two goals.
Â
