CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The High Point University men's soccer team hung tough against 15th-ranked Charlotte, ultimately falling 1-0 on Saturday night at Transamerica Field. The game signified the final exhibition for the squad before the season opener next week.
"Simply put, we were poor tonight in every facet," head coach
EJ O'Keeffe said. "Charlotte is a very good team and we did ourselves no favors. it was an uncharacteristic performance on our part and I know the guys are hungry to address it in training this coming week. We are looking forward to our regular season opener at home this Friday."
HPU was tested defensively against the nationaly-ranked 49ers, who ended up with a 23-1 edge in shots, including 9-0 in shots on goal. Despite the discrepancy, the Panthers remained even until the 83rd minute when Charlotte broke through on a free kick from 35' away that was headed in.
Redshirt-sophomore
Keegan Meyer made seven saves while playing the whole 90 minutes in net for HPU. Sophomore
Jonathan Bolanos provided the only shot for the Panthers.Â
High Point now turns its attention to the season opener on Friday, Aug. 25 at home against Howard. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. and is the first part of a doubleheader with the women's soccer team, who will take on Ohio at 7 p.m.Â
