HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University men's lacrosse team wraps up its 2017 regular season with a showdown against Air Force at noon on Saturday in Vert Stadium.
Â
The Panthers (4-9, 2-4) are coming off a huge 13-9 road win at Jacksonville, while Air Force (9-5, 5-1) picked up its biggest win of the season against Richmond last Saturday.Â
Â
Quick Hitters:
• The Panthers used a 7-1 run down the stretch to snap a four-game losing skid with a 13-9 victory at Jacksonville on Saturday afternoon.
Â
•
Michael LeClair exploded offensively with four goals and an assist to lead the Purple & White netting two goals and an assist to keep HPU close in the first half. His four goals and five points were both season highs for High Point in 2017.
Â
• Despite not scoring in the first half,
Mitchel Snyder tallied the first hat trick of his career with three goals in the final 27 minutes during HPU's late explosion.
Â
• In the cage,
Tim Troutner Jr. stopped 13 shots to anchor a defense that allowed just three goals after the halftime break. He also added four ground balls and one caused turnover in the win.
Â
•
Terrell Sands tied his career bests in ground balls (six) and caused turnovers (three) with a solid performance.
Â
• Along with LeClair, Basile's two first-half goals set the Panthers up for the second-half comeback.
Â
•
Connor Robinson posted three points in the win (1g, 2a).
Â
• The senior trio of
Michael LeClair (six),
Nick Basile (five) and
Sean Harrison (three) have combined for 14 of the team's 21 goals over the last two games.
Â
• HPU will honor its 10 seniors (LeClair, Basile, Harrison,
Cole Carns,
Connor McKemey,
Jimmy Wyrick,
Dallas Bridle,
Tanner Landstra,
Mick Horrocks and Dan McKenna Jr.) prior to opening face-off.
Â
Southern Conference Tournament Scenarios:
Furman, Air Force and Richmond have clinched the top three seeds, in an undetermined order, with the No. 4 seed still up in the air between High Point, Bellarmine and Jacksonville.
Â
• Bellarmine beats Jacksonville: Bellarmine is the No. 4 seed with a 4-3 record.
Â
• Jacksonville beats Bellarmine and Air Force beats HPU: Jacksonville is the No. 4 seed at 3-4 and the head-to-head tiebreaker over Bellarmine.
Â
• HPU beats Air Force and Jacksonville beats Bellarmine: High Point earns the No. 4 seed at 3-4 with a tiebreaker over Bellarmine and Jacksonville due to the win against the highest seed (Air Force).
Â
All-Time Series with Air Force:
The Falcons came to the Triad and defeated the Panthers in HPU's third NCAA contest. Then in 2015, the Purple & White hosted Air Force again picking up a 10-9 behind a four-goal outing by
Connor Robinson. However, the Falcons regained the series edge with a 13-4 victory in the first Southern Conference matchup between the two programs last season.
Â
Last Time They Met:
The Panthers flew to Colorado last season on a four-game winning streak, but fell 13-4 to the Falcons on March 19. Despite taking the loss,
Michael LeClair racked up two goals and an assist to lead the offense while
Terrell Sands registered four ground balls and two caused turnovers on the defensive end.
Â
Next Up:
As stated above, HPU's postseason hopes ride on Saturday's outcomes. A win by the Panthers along with Jacksonville beating Bellarmine would send High Point to Richmond for the SoCon semifinals, any other outcome on Saturday would bring the end of the season.
