Â
HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women's basketball team looks to extend its season-long four-game winning streak at Gardner-Webb on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Porter Arena.
Â
The Panthers (9-13, 7-4) completed a season sweep of Winthrop with a 70-57 victory on Tuesday behind another huge performance from the reigning Big South Player of the Week,
Emma Bockrath.
Â
Bockrath named CoSIDA Academic All-District
On Wednesday, the HPU sophomore guard became the third player in HPU women's basketball history to be named to the Academic All-District Team. She joined Leslie Cook (2005 and 2006) and Mackenzie Maier (2011) in earning that honor in the Purple & White.
Â
Quick Hitters
• HPU has experienced an offensive explosion during its four-game winning streak with all four wins coming by double digits. During the streak, the team is averaging 79.5 points per game thanks in large part to 18.5 assists per contest.
Â
• A win would give High Point its first five-game winning streak since Feb. 17-March 7, 2015, which included two Big South Tournament victories.
Â
•
Emma Bockrath is averaging 15.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.7 steals in HPU's 11 league contests.
Â
• During this season,
Kaylah Keys has become HPU's Division I leader in scoring, three-pointers, free throws and starts.
Â
• Keys is headed toward other remarkable career milestone. The guard needs 36 rebounds and three steals to become the first Panther in the team's Division I era to rack up 400 rebounds, 300 assists and 200 steals.
Â
• In 2015-16, the Purple & White averaged 35.8 rebounds per game and finished 241st in the nation. However, this season the Panthers are 64th this year with 40.8 rebounds per contest.
Â
• High Point dished out 17 assists on its 26 made shots on Tuesday. That brings the team's average to assists on 60.8 percent of its field goals. For comparison, the 2015-16 squad tallied out assists on 50.5 percent of its makes. This year, GWU has assisted on 49.1 percent of its made field goals.
Â
• This year's team could break the program's Division I record for free throw percentage and three-point percentage. The team is shooting .354 beyond the arc, which is just off the .356 mark in 2005-06 and is just .002 behind last year's team from the line.
Â
• The Panthers are up to 46th nationally at the charity stripe and 42nd from beyond the arc.
Â
• With four straight wins the Panthers are one game out of first place in the league. Down the stretch, HPU will get to host all three teams that tied for first (Liberty, Campbell and Radford).
Â
All-Time Series with Gardner-Webb
The Panthers lead the all-time series 18-12 despite dropping both meetings with the Runnin' Bulldogs in 2015-16.
Â
Last Time They Met
Emma Bockrath racked up 24 points, six rebounds and four assists to lead the Purple & White to a dramatic 71-69 victory in the Millis Center on Jan. 21.
Â
Scouting the Runnin' Bulldogs
Gardner-Webb is 5-6 in conference play, but only one of those loses came by more than 10 points and they are 6-2 in Porter Arena this season. The league's leading scorer, Tierra Huntsman, paces the squad and is the most accurate shooting squad in the league. GWU leads the Big South in conference action hitting 43.2 percent of its shots.
Â
The Matchup to Watch
Saturday's showdown will feature the top two scorers in the conference during league play. GWU's Tierra Huntsman is averaging 16.0 points against Big South foes while scoring just one more point in 11 league games than
Emma Bockrath (15.9 ppg). Likewise, Bockrath is the top three-point shooter during conference play (.488), but Huntsman is the leader overall (.360). In the first meeting between these two teams, both players finished with 24 points.
Â
Next Up
The Panthers are back home on Valentine's Day to take on Liberty in the Millis Center. The Flames are tied atop the league standings and have won nine of the last 10 times they visited the Triad.
