HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University men's soccer team fell at home to Appalachian State by a score of 1-0 in exhibition action on Saturday night at Vert Stadium.

"I thought we created some good chances early but unfortunately we didn't have that final product to slot some goals away," head coach EJ O'Keeffe said. "Appalachian State was very organized and effective and found a good goal. We woke up a bit with the red card and we performed well in the second half. We will use this as a learning experience so we don't put ourselves in that position moving forward."

The Panthers outshot ASU by a 13-7 margin and put five shots on frame but were unable to find a goal. Senior Chris Ramsell and redshirt-freshman Bana Gandidekeam led HPU with two shots on frame each.

Appalachian State got on the board first against the run of play with a goal by Stephen Chapman in the 20th minute. Daniel Avila hit a high ball over the back line and Chapman took it out of the air with his shot, sending a low effort to the far post.

The Panthers were forced to play a man down starting in the 35th minute when sophomore Johnny Fenwick was shown a straight red card for a tackle at the edge of the HPU penalty area.

"I think our two exhibition games were two great learning experiences for us," O'Keeffe said. "To play on the road in a great atmosphere in Clemson then playing at home and being down a man. We have a lot of work to do moving forward. The fans were fantastic tonight and hopefully that continues throughout the year starting Friday against a good ETSU team."

High Point begins the regular season with a home game against East Tennessee State on Friday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. The contest is part of an HPU soccer doubleheader and will follow the conclusion of the women's soccer game against Appalachian State.
