HPU, Winthrop battle for Big South crown Sunday

Live Video | Live Stats

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women's lacrosse team (11-4, 7-0) will take on Winthrop (16-2, 7-0) with the Big South regular season title on the line Sunday in Rock Hill, S.C.

First draw between the Panthers and Eagles is set for 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the Big South Network, with live stats also available via winthropeagles.com.

BATTLE OF THE UNDEFEATEDS
Sunday's game will mark the second time in Big South history that two undefeated teams will face off for the league crown during the final game of the regular season. During the league's second season in 2014, the Panthers battled former league member Davidson in Vert Stadium with both teams holding a 6-0 conference record. HPU earned the 15-8 victory. Then-sophomore Emily Meier posted two goals in the win for the Panthers, who also claimed the Big South Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight campaign.

LAST TIME OUT
High Point improved to 4-2 on the road this season with a 13-7 victory over Longwood Wednesday in Farmville. HPU limited the nation's No. 1-2 scoring punch – Katie McHugh and Sarah Butler – to just six total points in the game. The duo entered the contest averaging a combined 12 points per contest.

Freshman goalie Molly Andrews led the charge with eight saves while allowing just seven goals against the nation's No. 7 ranked offense (21.20 points/game). HPU's close defense and midfield also stepped up defensively, racking up caused turnovers on 13 of Longwood's 25 miscues on the night.

PERROTTA PACES THE PANTHERS WITH CAREER NIGHT
In the 13-7 win over Longwood, sophomore Erica Perrotta played arguably the best game of her career, registering a personal-best seven points on a career-high five goals and two assists. She also caused two turnovers and picked up a pair of ground balls in the win. A First Team All-Big South selection in 2015, Perrotta has been just as good as a sophomore. She has recorded at least three points in five of seven league games and caused at least one turnover in every Big South contest.

HISTORY vs. WINTHROP
Sunday's contest will mark the sixth all-time meeting between the Panthers and Eagles. HPU holds a 4-1 edge in the all-time series and is 1-1 all-time in Rock Hill. Last season, both meetings proved to be thrilling contests. HPU won the regular season meeting, 8-7, on a walk-off, overtime goal from Allie Foard on Apr. 24 in Vert Stadium. Winthrop then won the second game, 11-10, in the Big South semifinals just a week later in Rock Hill. Samantha Brown averaged 5.0 points and 3.0 goals in the two contests last season.
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES (16-2, 7-0)
Winthrop was picked to win the league in the 2016 Big South preseason poll and has lived up to expectations this season. The Eagles rank fifth in the country in scoring defense (6.33 GAA) and are ninth nationally in scoring offense (13.61 goals/game).

Midfielder Shannon Gallagher paces the Eagles on both sides of the field. The senior ranks 13th in the NCAA in points (64) and is third in caused turnovers (3.00/game). Katie Clark and Kristen Shriver have each chipped in 44 points, while sophomore goalie Alaina Girani is fourth nationally in goals against average (6.08).

NEXT UP
HPU will host a Big South Tournament quarterfinal game on next Saturday (Apr. 30) inside Vert Stadium. The game will be played at 3 p.m. and will be streamed on the Big South Network.
