The High Point University women's lacrosse team fell to Florida, 18-7, on Saturday in Gainesville, Fla. Senior
Alec Perry led HPU with two goals and one assist while senior
Jasmine Jordan won three draw controls with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
"I was disappointed with the way we started the game," said HPU head coach
Lyndsey Boswell. "We didn't come out with the fire that we needed to compete with a top ten team. Florida is a great team and they capitalized on our mistakes early and took advantage on the draw circle. By the time we got our feet underneath us and a little momentum it was too late. We are excited to get back to practice and make a few adjustments."
Perry and Carroll led the way with multi-point games while
Sara Kuhlman,
Christie Dougherty,
Emilie Pugliese and
Emily Meier also scored for the Panthers.
Clara Osmont had a team-high four draw controls and
Megan Weisman had two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Shannon Gilroy led the Gators with eight goals and 10 draw controls. Nora Barry added four goals and Sammi Burgess scored three times.
High Point was 12-of-12 on clear attempts while Florida went 13-of-16.
Fouls hurt the Panthers in the first half as HPU committed 19 fouls, which led to seven free-position goals. The Gators won the first four draw controls, resulting in four goal in the first three and a half minutes of the game.
Dougherty caused a turnover to give HPU its first offensive possession of the game. Perry was pushed while trying to catch a pass in front of the crease and was given a free-position shot. Perry scored to put the Panthers on the board with 18:57 on the clock.
HPU had a chance to cut further in to the 4-1 Florida lead but
Kendyl Gardner had a shot go off the post and
Leah Pace put a shot off the cross bar.
Florida went on a four-goal run to open up an 8-1 lead with 13 minutes left in the opening half. Perry scored her second free-position goal of the game with 11:09 on the clock to make it an 8-2 game. Florida finished the half with a six unanswered goals to lead 14-2 at halftime.
After three quick Florida goals, Kuhlman scored for the Panthers on a free-position attempt with 21:22 to play, to make it a 17-3 game. Carroll capitalized on a failed clear attempt by the Gators and raced down for a quick transition goal for HPU's fourth goal of the day. Carroll's goal was assisted by Perry.
High Point scored three straight goals with less than five minutes remaining in the game to cut Florida's lead to 18-7. Pugliese and Meier scored goals less than a minute apart. Dougherty was fouled, resulting in a yellow card. HPU capitalized on the man-advantage with a quick goal by Dougherty. The Panthers outscored the Gators 5-4 in the second half of the contest.
Julia Burns made eight saves in 56:26 minutes. Freshman
Hayley Peets made her collegiate debut in the cage with one save in 3:34 minutes of action.
High Point will continue its four-game road trip at Virginia Tech on Wednesday, Feb. 19. The game begins at 4 p.m. HPU beat the Hokies 9-5 at Vert Stadium to open the 2013 season.Â
