The High Point University women's soccer team picked up its fourth-straight win with a 1-0 victory over Gardner-Webb on Saturday night in Boiling Springs, N.C. Senior
Taylor Parker scored the game winner for HPU, her fourth goal in two games.
"This was another fantastic effort by our team tonight," head coach
Marty Beall said. "Our team defending, which was led by
Claire Kelly, was spectacular throughout the game and especially in the second half when we did not allow a single shot on goal. I am very proud of the effort our girls are putting into getting better every day. I was happy with our ability to keep possession throughout the game now we need to work on finishing our chances."
High Point outshot the Runnin' Bulldogs 9-3, including a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal during a scoreless first half. Senior
Kelli Joline had three of the Panthers' four shots on target in the opening 45 minutes.
HPU continued to pour on the pressure in the second half and finally broke through to take a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute on Parker's fourth goal of the season. The Gardner-Webb defense attempted to clear the ball out of the box, but Parker stopped it and beat the GWU keeper with a straight-on shot to put HPU in the lead.
High Point dominated possession in the second half. The Panthers outshot Gardner-Webb 13-3 overall and did not allow a single shot on goal.
Senior
Jesse May posted her third-straight shutout for High Point, making one save in the win. Amy Schmitt made seven saves for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the loss.
HPU improves to 4-5-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the Big South with the win, the team's fourth in as many games. Gardner-Webb falls to 2-7-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the Big South.
The Panthers next return home to play host to Winthrop on Wednesday, Oct. 2, in Vert Stadium at 7 p.m. High Point will look to get a measure of revenge against the Eagles who knocked HPU out of the Big South Tournament last season.Â
