High Point Draws with East Carolina on Sunday Afternoon

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The High Point University women's soccer team battled East Carolina University to a 2-2 draw Sunday afternoon.

Site: Johnson Stadium
Score: High Point 2, East Carolina 2
Records: High Point (1-2-1), East Carolina (0-1-3)

Head Coach Aaron McGuiness: "We are obviously disappointed that we couldn't lock down the win. In terms of the travel, the effort that we put forward, for a good portion of the game, I was really happy with how they fought through some of those moments. As much as the result isn't what we want, and we all felt that it felt a little bit like a loss. I do think that there's a lot of good that comes from it. You know Morgan got a great goal, Chloe got her first collegiate goal. We created a lot of other chances, and they had some good defending. We could have probably been cleaner in moments, and we need to switch on set pieces and lock them down to prevent them."

In the first half, Sophia Redner slipped the ball past three ECU defenders so Morgan Wilcox could rip a shot from the top left of the goal to put the Panthers ahead 1-0 at the 25-minute mark. Later, with a pass from Redner, Chloe Edwards took the chance to create a shot at the top of the penalty box and captured her first collegiate goal at the 39-minute mark.

Sabba Haghgoo had three shots on goal, one of which was a ball from Kasey Resker that she tried to head into bottom center. Abbie Zubryzcki had one shot on goal that was stopped bottom center, while Brooke Potter claimed two shots, one of which was saved bottom right.

The Pirates responded with a goal to close the 2-0 deficit after halftime, to later tie the score with a corner kick at minute 79. Potter and Haghgoo's shots gave the Panthers two chances to score before the clock ran out.

On defense, Aleena Ulke saw a breakaway from an ECU attacker and blocked a shot to keep the score 0-0.

HPU goalkeeper Nylah Mirshafiei held down the last line of defense in the first half with three back-to-back saves. In her 90 minutes of play, she claimed four saves while facing six shots.

Up Next: The Panthers return to Vert Stadium on Thursday, August 27, where they will face NC State University at 7 p.m.
