The High Point University baseball team couldn't complete the sweep of Army on opening weekend, falling to the Black Knights 6-1 in the final game of the series.

“It was good to win the series but we aren't satisfied by any means,” said head coach Craig Cozart. “The bullpen wasn't solid and our offense was inept, quite honestly. We know we have the pieces to win but we are still figuring how they all fit together.”

HPU starter Jacob Newberrry allowed one unearned run in 5-2/3 innings with six strikeouts but did not factor in to the decision. Junior Matt Armstead took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits in two innings of relief. He walked one batter and struck out one batter.

High Point moves to 2-1 on the season while Army's record stands at 1-2. Nick Dignacco pitched three innings of relief to earn the win for the Black Knights. He gave up one run on one hit with two walks and two strikeouts.

The game was tied 1-1 after seven innings when Army broke the game open with four runs in the eighth. Alex Jensen and Daniel Cortes both picked up RBI in the inning off Armstead before he was relieved by junior Adam Pratson. Kevin McKague ripped a double to the left centerfield gap to drive in two runs off Pratson and make the score 5-1. Pratson also allowed one run in the ninth inning.

HPU's lone run of the game came in the sixth inning. Ryan Retz grounded out to second base but picked up an RBI when Devin Bujnovsky scored.

Newberry worked out of trouble early in the game, getting out of bases loaded jams in the second and fourth innings. The junior right hander struck out Cortes in a six-pitch battle and then caught McKague looking on the outside corner to end the fourth inning. The Black Knights left nine runners on base through the first four innings.

Bujnovsky went 2-4 with a run scored in the game and Sal Pezzino was 1-2 with two walks.

High Point returns to Williard Stadium on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. game against Charlotte. The Panthers last faced Charlotte to open the 2010 season, splitting a home-and-home series.
